Her research at EMBL was marked by a unique blend of expertise in microbiology and developmental biology, and she was respected not only as a scientist but as a wife, mother, friend, colleague, mentor, and leader.

Eaton’s death prompted an outpouring of grief and tributes from around the world about how much she meant to so many people. Those closest to Eaton sought to commemorate her legacy and created a fund that received many wonderful donations in her memory. Ultimately, they decided a fitting memorial was a new playground at the EMBL Kinderhaus that would bring joy to EMBL children daily and reflect Eaton’s creativity and generosity.

      Recognising philanthropic support

For five decades, EMBL has thrived as a global hub for cutting-edge molecular biology research, training, and services. Open collaboration has been and continues to be at the very heart of our achievements, illustrated through a rich tapestry of partnerships woven with like-minded institutions and individuals.

With our ‘12 moments of philanthropy’ series during our 50th anniversary year, we want to express our deep gratitude towards individuals, foundations, and other supporters who have made a difference to EMBL through their vision and generosity. Each gift – whether small or large in financial terms – has helped advance science and nurture the scientists of the future in exemplary ways, illuminating the power of giving.

Our eighth moment of philanthropy is about honouring the memory of cherished EMBL alumna Suzanne Eaton by creating a joyful space that reflects her spirit – bringing happiness and inspiration to future generations at EMBL.

“We unanimously agreed this would be not only a perfect expression of Sue’s two great loves, but a very real fulfilment of her desire to make sure people would not have to choose between a love of family and a pursuit of science,” said Eaton’s sister Julie Broaddus about the significance of the playground.

The EMBL Kinderhaus, which plays a vital role in supporting EMBL’s mission by providing high-quality early education and care for employees’ children, has been a cornerstone of the EMBL community since 1991. Originally a parent initiative, the Kinderhaus has evolved over the years to meet the growing needs of EMBL staff and their families. For Eaton and her husband, Tony Hyman, also an EMBL alumnus, the Kinderhaus was an integral part of their lives. Their two sons, Max and Luke, both attended the Kinderhaus, and the family has fond memories of the nurturing environment it provided.

Suzanne Eaton’s sister Julie Broaddus and others attend an exhibition of artwork created by current Kinderhaus children to mark the opening of the new playground. So wie Eatons Andenken auf dem Spielplatz im Kinderhaus weiterlebt, wurde auch anderen Mitgliedern der EMBL Gemeinschaft bereits ein Denkmal gesetzt.
