Among the suggestions, Müller and the board selected Freddy Frischknecht’s proposal (EMBL predoctoral fellow, 1996-2000) who said, “While supporting excellence in science, we must also encourage more young researchers to communicate their work to the public.” Thus, the John Kendrew Young Scientist Award was born, dedicated to excellence in science and/or science communication.

      Recognising philanthropic support

For five decades, EMBL has thrived as a global hub for cutting-edge molecular biology research, training, and services. Open collaboration has been and continues to be at the very heart of our achievements, illustrated through a rich tapestry of partnerships woven with like-minded institutions and individuals.

With our ‘12 moments of philanthropy’ series during our 50th anniversary year, we want to express our deep gratitude towards individuals, foundations, and other supporters who have made a difference to EMBL through their vision and generosity. Each gift – whether small or large in financial terms – has helped advance science and nurture the scientists of the future in exemplary ways, illuminating the power of giving.

Our seventh moment of philanthropy is about honouring members of the EMBL community we hold in high esteem who have made a significant difference to our lives and the world we live in.

EMBL pensioners agreed to fund the award in its infancy, and the alumni community contributed a meaningful sum in response to the first call for support. This commitment impressed Roland Specker, an entrepreneur and philanthropist who was already close to EMBL and who personally knew and admired Kendrew. To date, Roland has funded the award for 15 years, gradually raising the prize from €1,000 to €15,000 per annum.

The John Kendrew Young Scientist Award is open to former pre- or postdoctoral fellows within seven years of leaving EMBL. This year’s recipient, Thibaut Brunet, was the 19th to receive the prize at EMBL’s 50th anniversary science symposium on 5 July.

Sir John Kendrew, who inspired this award to recognise young scientists. It is thus a special honour to receive this award, which I dedicate to all the colleagues who have trained and inspired me, at EMBL and elsewhere.”

The significance of this award lies in the combination of honouring Kendrew’s legacy while at the same time highlighting some of EMBL’s finest science from its young researchers. Moreover, the success of the John Kendrew Award inspired the creation of the Lennart Philipson Award and the Fotis Kafatos lecture, funded by EMBLEM and the Bodossaki Foundation, respectively.

Similar to some previous moments of philanthropy, this story exemplifies how the power of community giving can combine with individual philanthropy. It shows how small donations from the community can not only have a significant impact in their own right, but also play a major role in catalysing larger contributions.

In memory of John Kendrew and other pioneers, we continue to build on their legacies, fostering a culture of excellence, innovation, and generosity.
