{"id":6901,"date":"2016-04-21T06:00:43","date_gmt":"2016-04-21T04:00:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.embl.de\/?p=6901"},"modified":"2020-03-26T13:58:16","modified_gmt":"2020-03-26T12:58:16","slug":"1604-awards-honours","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/news\/lab-matters\/1604-awards-honours\/","title":{"rendered":"Awards &#038; Honours"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"p1\">The highest distinction in France, the Order of L\u00e9gion d\u2019Honneur, has been awarded to <strong>Anne Ephrussi<\/strong>, Senior Scientist and Head of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.embl.de\/research\/units\/dev_biology\/\">Developmental Biology Unit<\/a>. She also heads the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.embl.de\/training\/eicat\/index.html\">EMBL International Center for Advanced Training (EICAT)<\/a>, which comprises the EMBL PhD and Postdoctoral Programmes, as well as the Laboratory\u2019s advanced scientific training activities, including the Courses and Conferences programme. The French L\u00e9gion d\u2019Honneur is an order of chivalry established by Napoleon Bonaparte to recognise eminent accomplishments of service to France; for two centuries, the Order has been presented annually on behalf of the French Head of State to deserving individuals in all fields of activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"vf-blockquote\"><p class=\"p1\">Such recognition from my home country to which I feel very committed is a tremendous honour both professionally and personally<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p1\">Ephrussi is conferred with the rank of Chevalier de la Legion d\u2019Honneur (Knight of the Legion of Honour), for outstanding merit acquired in 23 years\u2019 service to the nation. Ephrussi received the medal of the Order from Professor Georges Cohen at a ceremony at the Institut Pasteur, in November 2015. \u201cSuch recognition from my home country to which I feel very committed is a tremendous honour both professionally and personally,\u201d she says. \u201cThe intimate ceremony with a few close family members, colleagues and friends, and the fact that the medal was pinned on me by Georges, an old friend and mentor, made this a very happy and special event.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<hr class=\"vf-divider\"\/>\n\n\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Jan Ellenberg<\/strong>, Head of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.embl.de\/research\/units\/cbb\/\">Cell Biology and Biophysics Unit <\/a>and coordinator of the preparatory phases of the Euro-BioImaging project, will be recognised as an Honorary Doctor of Philosophy by \u00c5bo Akademi University in Turku, Finland. The title is awarded for scientific merit within cell biology, and commitment to the biosciences and \u00c5bo Akademi University; specifically, his role in advancing the University\u2019s cellular research and Turku BioImaging, which is part of the Euro-BioImaging project. The honorary doctorate will be formally conferred at a ceremony in May 2016.<\/p>\n\n\n<hr class=\"vf-divider\"\/>\n\n\n<p class=\"p1\">This year\u2019s Chica and Heinz Schaller Research Award has been presented to EMBL <a href=\"http:\/\/www.embl.de\/research\/units\/scb\/lemke\/index.html\">group leader <strong>Edward Lemke<\/strong><\/a> and Hai- Kun Liu from German Cancer Research Center (Deutsches Krebsforschungszentrum, DKFZ).
