They experienced an advanced programme of hands-on training in molecular biology basic techniques while being immersed in ongoing research projects under the supervision of expert educators and active scientists. The format of the summer school that EMBL and Adamas Scienza organised with the Italian National Research Council (CNR) is intended to inspire and involve participants not only on a cognitive and scientific level but also on an emotional and social level, through collaboration and sharing.

      Recognising philanthropic support

For five decades, EMBL has thrived as a global hub for cutting-edge molecular biology research, training, and services. Open collaboration has been and continues to be at the very heart of our achievements, illustrated through a rich tapestry of partnerships woven with like-minded institutions and individuals.

With our ‘12 moments of philanthropy’ series during our 50th anniversary year, we want to express our deep gratitude towards individuals, foundations, and other supporters who have made a difference to EMBL through their vision and generosity. Each gift – whether small or large in financial terms – has helped advance science and nurture the scientists of the future in exemplary ways, illuminating the power of giving.

Our sixth ‘moment of philanthropy’ aims to show how philanthropy can powerfully connect us to individuals across time and place, carrying the torch of scientific inspiration to new places. This month, we go back to the summer of 2022, when a group of Italian high school students participated in a unique EMBL Rome training programme dedicated to the memory of an outstanding former EMBL scientist and innovator Riccardo Cortese. This opportunity – only possible because of generous contributions from Prof. Cortese’s family and friends – sparked a legacy of learning where his body of work and ethos served as an inspiration to participants.

While the unique immersive experience helps make this initiative stand out from other summer schools, the person to whom this edition was dedicated, EMBL alumnus Riccardo Cortese, provides a constant reminder of the impact of genomics and choosing a scientific career path.

After graduating in medicine from the University of Naples, Cortese directed for many years the Gene Expression programme at EMBL Heidelberg. Later, he became director of the Institute for Research in Molecular Biology in Pomezia, Italy, where he laid the foundation for developing innovative treatments for major diseases such as hepatitis C and AIDS. Though he died in 2017, he will long be remembered, as will his discoveries, such as the development of a novel approach to creating adenoviral-based vaccines, including the first vaccine against Ebola. Cortese led Italian biotechnology research to world excellence. A man of extraordinary intelligence and countless interests, he always stood out for his commitment to training young researchers.

It was in this spirit that Cortese’s family and friends joined together to create the wonderful philanthropic support that enabled the summer school to take place in 2022.

Riccardo Cortese was not only an impactful scientist, but one who took mentoring seriously, always encouraging collaborators and students. By nature, he was a mentor, always proud of the achievements of his collaborators and students whom he trusted to carry the torch. Summer in Science may set off the spark for some of the students to become as passionate about research and science as Riccardo was. We are glad to be part of this initiative.”

As we celebrate EMBL’s 50th anniversary, this example shows how philanthropy can connect EMBL’s past to the future and benefit science at large. Cortese’s legacy is sustained by the generous support of family and friends and lives on through all his scientific achievements and the many people inspired by his example – among those the young people who gathered for Summer in Science in 2022.

Throughout the year, look forward to monthly stories of philanthropists who have stepped in to support European life sciences.

At EMBL Rome, an immersive youth training programme is dedicated to, but also inspired by, alumnus Riccardo Cortese, thanks to private donors.

[17595
80,296,17289,796,17335,514,860,13072,27
5794,5144,5802
post-68845","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-connections","tag-alumni","tag-education","tag-embl50","tag-ord","tag-philanthropy-matters","tag-rome","tag-summer-school","tag-support-embl","tag-training","embl_taxonomy-alumni-relations","embl_taxonomy-epigenetics-and-neurobiology","embl_taxonomy-support-embl

At EMBL Rome, an immersive youth training programme is dedicated to, but also inspired by, alumnus Riccardo Cortese

“Summer in Science” is back!
