With this in mind, and recognising the need to broaden engagement across different sectors of a diverse society, EMBL Director Matthias Hentze announced the creation of Friends of EMBL at the Gala that celebrated EMBL’s 40th anniversary in 2014. At this time, EMBL was not well-known to non-scientists, so EMBL wanted to communicate its science to the general public. The warm response from event participants, including families and individuals who wanted to contribute, allowed the new Friends of EMBL programme to hit the road running. “Count on us,” many said.

“The positive response reassured us that we needed to expand and diversify the ways in which we share the fascination of molecular biology with interested audiences and invite them to join us as supporters so they feel connected to EMBL’s scientific achievements,” Hentze said.

      Recognising philanthropic support

For five decades, EMBL has thrived as a global hub for cutting-edge molecular biology research, training, and services. Open collaboration has been and continues to be at the very heart of our achievements, illustrated through a rich tapestry of partnerships woven with like-minded institutions and individuals.

With our ‘12 moments of philanthropy’ series during our 50th anniversary year, we want to express our deep gratitude towards individuals, foundations, and other supporters who have made a difference to EMBL through their vision and generosity. Each gift – whether small or large in financial terms – has helped advance science and nurture the scientists of the future in exemplary ways, illuminating the power of giving.

In this fifth moment of philanthropy, we look back at the history of commitment and belief from a very special, dynamic group of donors, Friends of EMBL. Matthias Hentze, Director of EMBL, shared some of his memories from 10 years ago, when Friends of EMBL first began.

The Friends of EMBL programme offers its members a unique opportunity to support life sciences research at the frontier. Contributions go towards projects that emerge from scientific developments and opportunities with great potential and are not covered by the EMBL budget. The funds actively drive innovative projects representing areas of greatest scientific and societal opportunity and need, enabling EMBL to go even further and even faster in its aim to make the world a better place.

Friends of EMBL is a way to understand and conduct science as an open, collaborative endeavour, where everyone has a stake and a place to contribute. This new anniversary gives us the opportunity to look to the future with fresh eyes and to learn and build on the rich substrate we have created.

Additionally, an annual PhD lunch brings together philanthropists and young researchers who provide a glimpse into ongoing cutting-edge research. The scientists provide stories about the challenges and joys of scientific research in EMBL’s thriving environment.

Friends of EMBL members play a vital role in driving EMBL’s progress. Their donations boost projects to reach new milestones or enhance their impact. Since 2014, Friends of EMBL has provided valued support to initiatives such as Women in Science, the Scientific Visitors Programme, the Environmental Research Initiative, the World of Molecular Biology Exhibition, and Microscopy for Schools. This year’s donations will accelerate the development of a first-in-class CrystalDirect4 robot prototype.

With EMBL’s 50th anniversary and Friends of EMBL 10th anniversary, this year is the perfect time to celebrate and shape the next decade of mutually rewarding relationships.

The Friends of EMBL community has steadily grown, especially because of members, who are wonderful ambassadors and attract a wider membership. This includes EMBL alumni, who share a common vision of the transformative potential of philanthropy to enable discoveries and nurture the next generation of scientists.

We invite you to become part of Friends of EMBL during our anniversary year!

Throughout the year, look forward to monthly stories of philanthropists who have stepped in to support European life sciences.
