EMBL was proposing a new kind of scientific user facility that would house the most cutting-edge imaging technologies and make them available in workflows that combine different scales of imaging to the European and global scientific community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Substantive advances in imaging technologies in the past two decades enable scientists to directly visualise the molecular machinery of life at unprecedented detail and in context with a broader understanding at different scales. Consequently, cutting-edge microscopy has become a central technology to enable scientific breakthroughs in life sciences. Of course, the limiting factor of using the full potential of these technologies is the expense, but also the complexity in set-up, maintenance, and usage of the advanced instrumentation. These limit accessibility and widespread use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<article class=\"vf-card vf-card--brand vf-card--striped vf-u-margin__bottom--800\" default>\n  <div class=\"vf-card__content | vf-stack vf-stack--400\">\n      <h3 class=\"vf-card__heading\">\n      Recognising philanthropic support    <\/h3>\n                <p class=\"vf-card__text\">For five decades, EMBL has thrived as a global hub for cutting-edge molecular biology research, training, and services. Open collaboration has been and continues to be at the very heart of our achievements, illustrated through a rich tapestry of partnerships woven with like-minded institutions and individuals.\r\n\r\nWith our \u201812 moments of philanthropy\u2019 series during our 50th anniversary year, we want to express our deep gratitude towards individuals, foundations, and other supporters who have made a difference to EMBL through their vision and generosity. Each gift \u2013 whether small or large in financial terms \u2013 has helped advance science and nurture the scientists of the future in exemplary ways, illuminating the power of giving.\r\n\r\nOur fourth &#8216;moment of philanthropy&#8217; \u2013 dedicated to the philanthropic supporters who played a key part in realising the vision of the EMBL Imaging Centre \u2013 is a wonderful example of how big ideas can open doors to exciting new partnerships.<\/p>\n      <\/div>\n<\/article>\n\n\n\n\n<p>This is what prompted EMBL in 2015 to pursue this vision of building the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/about\/info\/imaging-centre\/\">EMBL Imaging Centre<\/a> with the most recent technology, and world-class experts as service teams to support external researchers in accessing this technology and using the centre as a training ground for building workflows for technology at their home institutions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>EMBL had a track record of pioneering research and technological innovation, leadership in cutting-edge imaging, a strong and demonstrated commitment to providing services to the scientific community, and a well-known spirit for courageously embracing new opportunities. It made EMBL the ideal organisation to lead such a bold enterprise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, it also needed strong partners to fulfil this ambitious vision dynamically and realise its huge potential. Guided by its experience building EMBL\u2019s<a href=\"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/news\/lab-matters\/12-moments-of-philanthropy-1-klaus-tschira-and-the-atc\/\"> iconic Advanced Training Centre and how philanthropy played a unique role in catalysing those big ideas<\/a>, EMBL presented its vision to the Boehringer Ingelheim Stiftung (Foundation). There was no precedent for a facility like this. EMBL was proposing &#8216;a first&#8217; in the world.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our partners immediately saw the potential (and also the unknowns), and rather than honing in on potential obstacles and issues that still needed clarification, they embraced the idea enthusiastically, demonstrating the Foundation\u2019s commitment to innovation, science, and empowering the next generation of scientists. A second major donation came from an unlikely source: the building materials company Heidelberg Materials. Here, the leadership aligned with the principle that a world-renowned company wanted to exercise social responsibility and support world-class science. Their names now feature among the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the State Ministry of Baden-W\u00fcrttemberg for Sciences, Research and Arts (MWK), and industry partners (Thermo Fisher Scientific, Leica Microsystems and Carl Zeiss Microscopy) on the list of funders that made the EMBL Imaging Centre a reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"vf-figure wp-block-image size-full is-style-default\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"620\" height=\"425\" class=\"vf-figure__image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/EMBL-IC-stone-laying.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-67907\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/EMBL-IC-stone-laying.jpg 620w, https:\/\/www.embl.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/EMBL-IC-stone-laying-300x206.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><figcaption class=\"vf-figure__caption\">In April 2019 the foundation stone-laying ceremony for the EMBL Imaging Centre took place. Since opening its doors in 2021, the EMBL Imaging Centre has surpassed all expectations: hundreds of scientists from across the globe have accessed the latest technologies each year \u2013 including some not yet commercially available. Drawing on EMBL\u2019s unique expertise and spirit, these visitors have received support from sample preparation to image analysis through tailored guidance and training with expert staff. User samples that were imaged already have spanned a wide breadth of scales and species \u2013 from whole organisms to tissues, individual cells, bacteria, and viruses, as well as protein complexes and individual proteins, leading to discoveries that would otherwise have been impossible. The EMBL Imaging Centre has also served as an inspiring role model for other imaging facilities that have since been established elsewhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As every visitor to the EMBL Imaging Centre can attest, the facility is a unique example of attractive architecture, open innovation, and collaboration. It pushes the boundaries of knowledge, fuelled by visionary support from public and private partners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Throughout the year, look forward to monthly stories of philanthropists who have stepped in to support European life sciences. Das EMBL plante eine neue Art wissenschaftlicher Einrichtung, die die modernsten Mikroskope beherbergen und sie &#8211; gekoppelt mit der n\u00f6tigen Expertise &#8211; der weltweiten wissenschaftlichen Gemeinschaft zur Verf\u00fcgung stellen sollte.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bildgebende Technologien haben in den letzten zwei Jahrzehnten riesige Fortschritte gemacht. Heute k\u00f6nnen wir die molekularen Mechanismen des Lebens in bisher unerreichtem Detail, in verschiedenen Zusammenh\u00e4ngen und Ma\u00dfst\u00e4ben direkt sichtbar machen. Folglich ist die hochmoderne Mikroskopie zu einer zentralen Technologie geworden, die wissenschaftliche Durchbr\u00fcche in den Lebenswissenschaften erm\u00f6glicht. Der begrenzende Faktor bei der Nutzung des vollen Potenzials dieser Technologien sind einerseits die Kosten, aber auch die Komplexit\u00e4t bei der Installation, Wartung und Nutzung der fortschrittlichen Instrumente. Dies schr\u00e4nkt die Zug\u00e4nglichkeit und den breiten Einsatz dieser wichtigen Technologien stark ein.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<article class=\"vf-card vf-card--brand vf-card--striped vf-u-margin__bottom--800\" default>\n  <div class=\"vf-card__content | vf-stack vf-stack--400\">\n      <h3 class=\"vf-card__heading\">\n      Dank an unsere F\u00f6rderer    <\/h3>\n                <p class=\"vf-card__text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In f\u00fcnf Jahrzehnten hat sich das EMBL als globales Zentrum f\u00fcr molekularbiologische Spitzenforschung, Services und Dienstleistungen etabliert. Offene Zusammenarbeit und Forschung war und ist das Herzst\u00fcck unserer Errungenschaften, die sich in einem reichen Netz von Partnerschaften mit gleichgesinnten Institutionen und Einzelpersonen widerspiegeln.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mit unserer Reihe \u201e12 Momente der Philanthropie\u201c im Jahr unseres 50-j\u00e4hrigen Bestehens m\u00f6chten wir Einzelpersonen, Stiftungen und anderen Unterst\u00fctzenden, die durch ihre Vision und Gro\u00dfz\u00fcgigkeit das EMBL ma\u00dfgeblich gef\u00f6rdert haben, unsere tiefe Dankbarkeit ausdr\u00fccken. Jede Spende &#8211; ob klein oder gro\u00df &#8211; hat dazu beigetragen, die Wissenschaft voranzubringen und Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler auf inspirierende Weise zu st\u00e4rken und die Kraft des Gebens zu verk\u00f6rpern.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unser vierter \u201eMoment der Philanthropie\u201c &#8211; gewidmet den philanthropischen Unterst\u00fctzern, die eine Schl\u00fcsselrolle bei der Verwirklichung des EMBL Imaging Centre gespielt haben &#8211; ist ein wunderbares Beispiel daf\u00fcr, wie vision\u00e4re Ideen T\u00fcren zu neuen Partnerschaften \u00f6ffnen k\u00f6nnen.<\/span><\/p>\n      <\/div>\n<\/article>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Aus diesen Gr\u00fcnden entschloss sich das EMBL im Jahr 2015 dazu, die Idee f\u00fcr den Aufbau des Imaging Centres zu verfolgen. Es sollte nicht nur mit den modernsten Technologien ausgestattet sein, sondern Forschenden aus aller Welt auch Unterst\u00fctzung und Training f\u00fcr die Nutzung der neuesten Mikroskope durch Experten von Weltrang anbieten.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Das EMBL konnte zu dem Zeitpunkt bereits auf eine Reihe von Pionierleistungen in Forschung und technologischer Innovation zur\u00fcckblicken, sowie auf eine F\u00fchrungsrolle in der modernen Bildgebung. Die Bereitstellung von Dienstleistungen f\u00fcr die wissenschaftliche Gemeinschaft ist eine seiner wichtigsten Missionen. Auch zeichnet sich das EMBL dadurch aus, dass es in seiner Geschichte immer wieder mutig neue Chancen ergriffen hat. All dies machte das EMBL zur idealen Organisation, um ein solch k\u00fchnes Vorhaben zu leiten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Was es brauchte, waren starke Partner, um diese ehrgeizige Vision rapide umsetzen zu k\u00f6nnen und ihr enormes Potenzial auszusch\u00f6pfen. Angespornt durch die Erfahrungen bei der Verwirklichung des <a href=\"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/news\/lab-matters\/12-moments-of-philanthropy-1-klaus-tschira-and-the-atc\/\">Advanced Training Centre<\/a>, bei der Philanthropie eine tragende Rolle spielte, stellte das EMBL seine Vision des Imaging Centres der Boehringer Ingelheim Stiftung vor.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Es gab keinen Pr\u00e4zedenzfall f\u00fcr eine Einrichtung wie diese; das EMBL schlug &#8220;eine Weltneuheit&#8221; vor. Unsere Partner sahen sofort das Potenzial (und auch die Unw\u00e4gbarkeiten), und anstatt sich auf m\u00f6gliche Hindernisse zu konzentrieren, nahmen sie die Idee begeistert auf und demonstrierten damit das Engagement der Stiftung f\u00fcr Innovation, Wissenschaft und die F\u00f6rderung des wissenschaftlichen Nachwuchses. Eine zweite gro\u00dfe Spende kam von ganz anderer Seite: dem Baustoffunternehmen Heidelberg Materials. Hier war sich die Gesch\u00e4ftsf\u00fchrung einig, dass ein weltbekanntes Unternehmen gesellschaftliche Verantwortung \u00fcbernehmen und Wissenschaft von Weltrang unterst\u00fctzen will. Die Namen dieser beiden Partner stehen nun neben dem Bundesministerium f\u00fcr Bildung und Forschung (BMBF), dem Ministerium f\u00fcr Wissenschaft, Forschung und Kunst (MWK) des Landes Baden-W\u00fcrttemberg und den Industriepartnern Thermo Fisher Scientific, Leica Microsystems und Carl Zeiss Microscopy auf der Liste der F\u00f6rderer, die das EMBL Imaging Centre Wirklichkeit werden lie\u00dfen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Was vor einigen Jahren nur eine vision\u00e4re Idee war, hat sich schnell zu einem gro\u00dfen internationalen Erfolg entwickelt. Seit seiner Er\u00f6ffnung im Jahr 2021 hat das EMBL Imaging Centre alle Erwartungen \u00fcbertroffen: Jedes Jahr nutzen Hunderte von Wissenschaftlern und Wissenschaftlerinnen aus der ganzen Welt den Zugang zu den neuesten Technologien &#8211; auch zu solchen, die noch nicht kommerziell verf\u00fcgbar sind. Dank des einzigartigen Know-hows des EMBL werden diese Besucher von der Probenvorbereitung bis hin zur Bildanalyse durch individuelle Beratung und Schulung von Fachpersonal unterst\u00fctzt. Die Proben, die bisher von den Mikroskopen abgebildet wurden, umfassen ein breites Spektrum an Gr\u00f6\u00dfen und Arten &#8211; von ganzen Organismen \u00fcber Gewebe, einzelne Zellen, Bakterien und Viren bis hin zu Proteinkomplexen und einzelnen Proteinen &#8211; und haben zu Entdeckungen gef\u00fchrt, die sonst unm\u00f6glich gewesen w\u00e4ren. Das EMBL Imaging Centre hat auch als Vorbild f\u00fcr andere \u201cImaging\u201d-Einrichtungen gedient, die seither an anderen Orten entstanden sind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wie alle Besuchenden des EMBL Imaging Centres best\u00e4tigen k\u00f6nnen, ist die Einrichtung ein einzigartiges Beispiel f\u00fcr attraktive Architektur, offene Innovation und Zusammenarbeit.
