In March 2010, EMBL\u2019s Advanced Training Centre (ATC) celebrated its grand opening on the Heidelberg campus. This was a pivotal moment in EMBL\u2019s history, initiating a major change in the reach and impact of scientific training \u2013 one of our key missions. Since then, tens of thousands of scientists from all over the world have been trained and inspired within the ATC\u2019s striking and state-of-the-art setting. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n Recognising philanthropic support <\/h3>\n

For five decades, EMBL has thrived as a global hub for cutting-edge molecular biology research, training, and services. Open collaboration has been and continues to be at the very heart of our achievements, illustrated through a rich tapestry of partnerships woven with like-minded institutions and individuals.\r\n

\r\nWith our \u201812 moments of philanthropy\u2019 series during our 50th anniversary year, we want to express our deep gratitude towards individuals, foundations, and other supporters who have made a difference to EMBL through their vision and generosity. Each gift \u2013 whether small or large in financial terms \u2013 has helped advance science and nurture the scientists of the future in exemplary ways, illuminating the power of giving.\r\n

\r\nWe start our anniversary year with a very special ‘moment of philanthropy’ that really was a turning point in more ways than one \u2013 an example with profound impact because it inspired EMBL to connect more closely with individuals who love science and who wish to contribute to shaping a better future.<\/p>\n <\/div>\n<\/article>\n\n\n\n\n

At the origin of what would become the ATC lies the vision and dedication of one individual: Klaus Tschira (1940\u20132015), physicist, SAP co-founder, and philanthropist. A single conversation in 2004 between Tschira and Matthias Hentze, current EMBL director, launched the whole idea. Tschira suggested the idea of a \u2018double helix building\u2019 as an icon for molecular biology training in Europe. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Afterwards, the Klaus Tschira Foundation<\/a> enabled this visionary and game-changing project through a transformative donation that catalysed substantial additional support from the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, the state of Baden W\u00fcrttemberg, and the Dietmar Hopp Foundation<\/a>, which specifically made the ATC training labs a reality. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As we reflect on Klaus Tschira’s inspiring contribution to the EMBL ATC, we recognise a legacy that far transcends financial support for an iconic infrastructure. It is a legacy of passion, vision, and a profound belief in the transformative power of education, collaboration, and science. And in hindsight, it has also become the launch pad for the power of philanthropy touching EMBL.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Klaus Tschira und das ATC<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Ein entscheidendes Gespr\u00e4ch vor 20 Jahren f\u00fchrte zur Errichtung des ikonischen ‘Doppelhelix-Geb\u00e4udes’, des EMBL Advanced Training Centre.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Im M\u00e4rz 2010 wurde das Advanced Training Centre (ATC) des EMBL auf dem Heidelberger Campus feierlich er\u00f6ffnet. Dies war ein entscheidender Moment in der Geschichte des EMBL, der die Reichweite und Wirkung der wissenschaftlichen Ausbildung – eine unserer wichtigsten Aufgaben – entscheidend ver\u00e4nderte. Seitdem sind Zehntausende von Wissenschaftlern und Wissenschaftlerinnen aus der ganzen Welt in der beeindruckenden und hochmodernen Umgebung des ATC ausgebildet und inspiriert worden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Seit f\u00fcnf Jahrzehnten hat sich das EMBL als globales Zentrum f\u00fcr molekularbiologische Spitzenforschung, Services und Dienstleistungen etabliert. Offene Zusammenarbeit und Forschung war und ist das Herzst\u00fcck unserer Errungenschaften, die sich in einem reichen Netz von Partnerschaften mit gleichgesinnten Institutionen und Einzelpersonen widerspiegeln.\r\n

\r\nMit unserer Reihe “12 Momente der Philanthropie” im Jahr unseres 50-j\u00e4hrigen Bestehens m\u00f6chten wir Einzelpersonen, Stiftungen und anderen Unterst\u00fctzenden, die durch ihre Vision und Gro\u00dfz\u00fcgigkeit einen Unterschied f\u00fcr das EMBL gemacht haben, unsere tiefe Dankbarkeit ausdr\u00fccken. Jede Spende – ob klein oder gro\u00df – hat dazu beigetragen, die Wissenschaft voranzubringen und die Wissenschaftler und Wissenschaftlerinnen der Zukunft auf inspirierende Weise zu f\u00f6rdern und die Kraft des Gebens zu verk\u00f6rpern.\r\n

\r\nWir beginnen unser Jubil\u00e4umsjahr mit einem \u201cMoment of Philanthropy\u201d, der ganz besonders heraussticht – einem Beispiel mit tiefgreifender Wirkung, weil es das EMBL dazu inspiriert hat, sich enger mit Menschen zu verbinden, die die Wissenschaft lieben und zur Gestaltung einer besseren Zukunft beitragen wollen.<\/p>\n <\/div>\n<\/article>\n\n\n\n\n

Der Ursprung dessen, was das ATC werden sollte, liegt in der Vision und dem Engagement einer einzigen Person: Klaus Tschira (1940-2015), Physiker, SAP-Mitbegr\u00fcnder und Philanthrop. Ein einzelnes Gespr\u00e4ch zwischen Tschira und Matthias Hentze, dem heutigen EMBL-Direktor, im Jahr 2004 gab den Ansto\u00df f\u00fcr die gesamte Idee.
