On Thursday 14 December 2023, the Universit\u00e9 Grenoble Alpes (UGA) and the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) celebrated the renewal of their agreement for the delivery of a UGA doctoral degree and a joint training certificate to doctoral students carrying out their thesis work at EMBL. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the first agreement was signed in 1999, more than 50 EMBL doctoral students have obtained their doctorate at UGA \u2013 the majority having carried out their thesis work at EMBL Grenoble \u2013 and 14 doctoral students are currently pursuing their PhD degree at EMBL Grenoble. In the course of the joint PhD training, the doctoral students benefit from supervision and training during their thesis, right up to the delivery of a joint training certificate. The two institutions celebrated their strong collaboration during UGA’s Welcome Day for doctoral students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event took place at Maison du doctorat Jean Kuntzmann, to welcome first-year doctoral students from the Chemistry and Life Sciences (CSV) doctoral school, in the presence of Kristina Djinovic-Carugo, Head of EMBL Grenoble, Monika Lachner, Dean of Graduate Studies at EMBL, Herv\u00e9 Courtois, Vice-President of Research and Innovation at UGA, Pierre Lemonde, Director of UGA Doctoral College, and Marc Jamin, Director of UGA’s CSV doctoral school. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m very excited about the renewal of this agreement with UGA and the opportunities for our students to connect with the local scientific and academic environment. This will be extremely important for their career development,\u201d said Lachner. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Doctoral training is a key priority for UGA, so it is a real ambition for us to strengthen these links between the EMBL and the UGA. We are very enthusiastic about extending this long-standing collaboration for the benefit of our doctoral students,” said Courtois.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The collaboration between the two institutions will continue beyond 2023, with the award of grants from the ‘UGA Research Initiative\u2019 programme to two doctoral thesis projects shared between EMBL and two UGA-associated research units \u2013 the Institut de Biologie Structurale (IBS (CEA\/CNRS\/UGA)) and the Institute for Advanced Biosciences (IAB (UGA\/Inserm\/CNRS)). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first thesis project, initiated between the research groups of Eva Kowalinski (EMBL Grenoble) and Darren Hart (IBS), will be led by Konstantinos Melioupoulos from Greece, who has a background in molecular biology and biomedicine. His thesis will focus on the identification and optimisation of anti-parasitic peptides targeting Trypanosoma brucei<\/em>, which causes sleeping sickness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The other thesis project will focus on new therapeutic approaches for the treatment of cancer, through the study of the molecular mechanisms of pre-messenger RNAs. It will be led by Euan Colaco Osorio from the United Kingdom, who has a background in biochemistry and structural biology. He will carry out his thesis within the research groups of Jos\u00e9 Antonio Marquez (EMBL Grenoble) and Andr\u00e8s Palencia (IAB).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These doctoral students will benefit from the complementary expertise of the different research groups and molecular and structural biology techniques at the institutes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI see the future as very bright. The GATES programme will allow us to broaden our collaboration with UGA, as it will co-fund 10 doctoral students over 8 years. These activities are an excellent basis for the establishment of  a memorandum of understanding between UGA and EMBL, which we are working on,\u201d said Djinovic-Carugo. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n EMBL involvement in the 'UGA Research Initiative\u2019 programme <\/h3>\n

The \u2018UGA Research Initiative\u2019 programme is part of GATES \u2013 \u2018Grenoble ATtractiveness and ExcellenceS\u2019 \u2013 an ambitious, multi-dimensional partnership project aimed at boosting the visibility and attractiveness of the Universit\u00e9 Grenoble Alpes (UGA) ecosystem in terms of research and training. One of the pillars of GATES focuses on enhancing the international attractiveness of UGA through the development of collaborations with international partners like EMBL.<\/span>\r\n

\r\nUGA launched the GATES programme after being selected among 17 awardees of France 2030’s ExcellencES call for projects, issued by the Ministry for Higher Education and Research, to recognise academic excellence and support higher education and research establishments with ambitious transformation plans for their sites.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/div>\n<\/article>\n\n\n\n\n

Les deux \u00e9tablissements ont c\u00e9l\u00e9br\u00e9, lors de la Journ\u00e9e d\u2019accueil des doctorants de l\u2019UGA, le renouvellement de l\u2019accord de partenariat initi\u00e9 en 1999 pour la d\u00e9livrance du dipl\u00f4me de doctorat et l\u2019attribution d\u2019un certificat de formation conjoint.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

L\u2019Universit\u00e9 Grenoble Alpes (UGA) et le Laboratoire europ\u00e9en de biologie mol\u00e9culaire (EMBL) ont sign\u00e9 le jeudi 14 d\u00e9cembre 2023 le renouvellement de l\u2019accord pour la d\u00e9livrance du dipl\u00f4me de doctorat de l\u2019UGA et l\u2019attribution d\u2019un certificat de formation conjointe aux doctorants et doctorantes qui effectuent leur travail de th\u00e8se \u00e0 l\u2019EMBL.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Depuis le premier accord sign\u00e9 en 1999, plus de cinquante \u00e9tudiants et \u00e9tudiantes de l\u2019EMBL ont obtenu leur doctorat aupr\u00e8s de l\u2019UGA, la majorit\u00e9 ayant effectu\u00e9 leur th\u00e8se \u00e0 l\u2019EMBL Grenoble, et 14 \u00e9tudiants et \u00e9tudiantes sont actuellement en cours de cursus \u00e0 l\u2019EMBL Grenoble. Au-del\u00e0 de la diplomation, l\u2019ensemble du cursus est pris en consid\u00e9ration, les doctorantes et doctorants b\u00e9n\u00e9ficiant de l\u2019encadrement et la formation n\u00e9cessaires durant leur th\u00e8se, jusqu\u2019\u00e0 la d\u00e9livrance d\u2019un certificat de formation conjointe. C\u2019est donc un partenariat soutenu que les deux \u00e9tablissements ont c\u00e9l\u00e9br\u00e9 lors de la Journ\u00e9e d\u2019accueil des doctorants \u00e0 l\u2019UGA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

L\u2019\u00e9v\u00e9nement s\u2019est d\u00e9roul\u00e9 au sein de la Maison du doctorat Jean Kuntzmann, \u00e0 l\u2019occasion de l\u2019accueil des doctorants de premi\u00e8re ann\u00e9e de l\u2019\u00c9cole doctorale Chimie et Sciences du Vivant (CSV), en la pr\u00e9sence de Kristina Djinovic-Carugo, directrice de l\u2019EMBL Grenoble, Monika Lachner, directrice des \u00e9tudes sup\u00e9rieures \u00e0 l\u2019EMBL, aux c\u00f4t\u00e9s d\u2019Herv\u00e9 Courtois, vice-pr\u00e9sident recherche et innovation, de Pierre Lemonde, directeur du Coll\u00e8ge des \u00e9tudes doctorales et de Marc Jamin, directeur de l\u2019\u00c9cole doctorale CSV de l\u2019UGA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00ab C\u2019est une r\u00e9elle ambition pour l\u2019UGA, pour qui la formation doctorale est une priorit\u00e9 essentielle, de renforcer sur le long terme ces liens entre l\u2019EMBL et l\u2019UGA. Nous sommes tr\u00e8s enthousiastes de signer la prolongation de cette longue collaboration au b\u00e9n\u00e9fice de nos doctorantes et doctorants,\u00bb pr\u00e9cise Herv\u00e9 Courtois.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La collaboration entre les deux \u00e9tablissements est \u00e9galement renforc\u00e9e au-del\u00e0 de 2023 avec l\u2019attribution de bourses du programme \u2018Initiative de Recherche \u00e0 l\u2019UGA\u2019 (IRGA) \u00e0 deux projets de th\u00e8se partag\u00e9s entre l\u2019EMBL et des unit\u00e9s de recherche rattach\u00e9es \u00e0 l\u2019UGA, l\u2019Institut de Biologie Structurale – IBS (CEA\/CNRS\/UGA) et l\u2019Institute for Advanced Biosciences – IAB (UGA\/Inserm\/CNRS).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Un projet de th\u00e8se, initi\u00e9 entre les groupes de recherche d\u2019Eva Kowalinski (EMBL Grenoble) et de Darren Hart (IBS), a \u00e9t\u00e9 attribu\u00e9 \u00e0 Konstantinos Melioupoulos, originaire de Gr\u00e8ce et ayant effectu\u00e9 ses \u00e9tudes en biologie mol\u00e9culaire et biom\u00e9decine. Il sera men\u00e9 par Euan Colaco Osorio, originaire du Royaume-Uni, ayant une formation en biochimie et biologie structurale. Il effectuera sa th\u00e8se au sein des groupes de recherche de Jos\u00e9 Antonio Marquez (EMBL Grenoble) et d\u2019Andr\u00e8s Palencia (IAB).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Les doctorants b\u00e9n\u00e9ficieront de l\u2019expertise compl\u00e9mentaire des diff\u00e9rents groupes de recherche et des techniques de biologie mol\u00e9culaire et structurale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00ab Je me r\u00e9jouis de cet avenir tr\u00e8s prometteur. Le programme GATES nous permettra d’\u00e9largir notre collaboration avec l\u2019UGA, puisqu’il cofinancera 10 doctorants sur 8 ans \u00bb, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 Kristina Djinovic-Carugo. \u00ab Ces activit\u00e9s constituent une excellente base \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9tablissement d’un protocole d’entente entre l’UGA et l’EMBL, qui est actuellement en cours de discussion. \u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Le programme IRGA fait partie de GATES – ‘Grenoble ATtractiveness and ExcellenceS’ – un projet de partenariat ambitieux et multidimensionnel visant \u00e0 renforcer la visibilit\u00e9 et l’attractivit\u00e9 de l’\u00e9cosyst\u00e8me de l’Universit\u00e9 Grenoble Alpes (UGA) en termes de recherche et de formation. L’un des piliers de GATES vise \u00e0 renforcer l’attractivit\u00e9 internationale de l’UGA par le d\u00e9veloppement de collaborations avec des partenaires internationaux tels que l’EMBL.<\/span>\r\n
