The exhibition, titled ‘The World of Molecular Biology’, aims not only to stimulate a joint dialogue about life research, but also to inspire enthusiasm for the wonderful world of molecular biology. With this in mind, since early summer, the EMBL Science Education and Public Engagement (SEPE) team has been guiding school groups aged 14 and above, as well as other registered visitors through the impressive, interactive exhibition, while organising workshops with inquisitive young people from all over the region. The EMBL team also offers additional material for school lessons on topics such as molecular biology or cell biology.

The German Federal Minister of Education and Research, Bettina Stark-Watzinger, has now visited the exhibition which was made possible in part thanks to funding from the Federal Ministry BMBF. In her speech, she addressed the other exhibition visitors, including Heidelberg’s Lord Mayor Eckart Würzner, representatives of the H.W. & J. Hector Foundation and the Carl-Zeiss-Foundation, as well as other supporters of the exhibition. EMBL’s Director General Edith Heard hosted the event and several other EMBL scientists were present, as were representatives of Heidelberg University and the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region.

The Minister emphasised the priceless value of direct encounters between active researchers and young people, who gain valuable insights and information about scientific research, specifically regarding the role of fundamental research in the life sciences.

“Research is the cure of tomorrow. Molecular biology in particular lays the foundation for new therapeutic approaches and can provide us with real game changers. This is why the Federal Ministry of Education and Research is committed to communicating this exciting research and is funding the EMBL exhibition ‘The World of Molecular Biology’ with almost 2 million EUR as part of the National Decade Against Cancer. This exhibition is unique in the world: with the help of virtual reality, it makes molecular biology tangible and introduces young and old to the fascinating world of molecular biology. It shows why basic research is so important for a better understanding of cancer, for example.”

Petra Olschowski, Baden-Württemberg’s Minister of Science, Research, and the Arts, emphasised how in her role as Chairwoman of the Foundation Administration of the Carl Zeiss Foundation, she sees the added value of cooperation between research, private sponsors, foundations, as well as politics for a common goal: communicating science to society and the next generation.”

‘The World of Molecular Biology’ encourages people to actively engage with scientific research and its significance for everyday life – for example, through fundamental insights into the development and prevention of cancer. Visitors are informed about various aspects of cancer research: how are state-of-the-art technologies being used to understand the development of cancer? How do research projects contribute to deciphering how tumours develop in individual patients? And how can this knowledge be used to improve cancer prevention and treatment?

Open exchange and dialogue about such topics presented at an active research centre is intended to inspire a potential next generation of scientists with EMBL’s passion for fundamental biological research.

Agnes Szmolenszky, Head of Science Education and Public Engagement (SEPE) at EMBL Heidelberg was delighted that the exhibition was recognised by the ministries and supporters in attendance. “It is wonderful that the importance of our scientific education and outreach activities is acknowledged and appreciated by important sponsors in politics, and also in the regional foundation landscape,” she said.

German Federal Minister Stark-Watzinger and representatives from the politics, research, and philanthropic communities visited the EMBL exhibition ‘The World of Molecular Biology’.
First row: Prof. Eckart Würzner, Josephine Hector, Dr. Hans-Werner Hector, Prof. Edith Heard, Bettina Stark-Watzinger, Petra Olschowski, Dr. Manfred Fuchs, Rainer Arens
Second row: Horst-Bodo Schauer, Stephan Brandhuber, Uwe Bleich, Dr. Felix Streiter
Credit: Kinga Lubowiecka/EMBL

EMBL is grateful for financial support for ‘The World of Molecular Biology’ from:

H.W. & J. Nicht nur, um einen gemeinsamen Dialog über die Lebens-Forschung anzuregen, sondern vor allem, um für die wunderbare Welt der Molekularbiologie zu begeistern.
