{"id":6436,"date":"2015-12-09T10:02:49","date_gmt":"2015-12-09T09:02:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.embl.de\/?p=6436"},"modified":"2024-04-19T16:02:12","modified_gmt":"2024-04-19T14:02:12","slug":"1512-jurassic-park","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/news\/events\/1512-jurassic-park\/","title":{"rendered":"Dinosaurs, DNA and Dolly"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In 1993, <em>Jurassic Park<\/em> roared into cinemas, bringing dinosaurs back from extinction in a dazzling and now-classic cautionary tale of genetics (not to mention prehistoric predators) gone awry. In the second <a href=\"http:\/\/www.embl.de\/aboutus\/support-embl\/events\/friends-of-embl-annual-programme\/science-movie-night\/index.html\">EMBL Science Movie Night<\/a>, it was the task of Anna Steyer and Katharina Zirngibl to debunk the myths of dino DNA, cloning and genetic engineering. In the process, they challenged their own knowledge and understanding of key themes and controversies in the life sciences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2018Bingo! Dino DNA\u2019<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Explaining complex scientific concepts to a non-expert audience is a tricky task. In <em>Jurassic Park<\/em>, the cartoon character \u2018Mr DNA\u2019 \u2013 a whimsical animated double-helix strand \u2013 educates visitors on how the Park\u2019s dinosaurs are recreated. EMBL\u2019s two Miss DNAs, Steyer and Zirngibl, took this as a cue to discuss DNA sequencing and recombination, becoming as fascinated by the topic as their audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image wp-image-6440 size-full\"><figure class=\"vf-figure  | vf-figure--align vf-figure--align-centered \"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"620\" height=\"380\" class=\"vf-figure__image\" src=\"http:\/\/news.embl.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/ScienceMovieNight_3.jpg\" alt=\"Katharina Zirngibl helps to debunk the myths of dino DNA. PHOTO: EMBL\/Marietta Schupp<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In the two decades since <em>Jurassic Park<\/em> took its first bite of the box office, genetics has evolved significantly. Scientists have now calculated that we\u2019re nearly 60 million years too late to recover any traces of fossilised prehistoric DNA. \u201cThe stability of genetic material, what factors influence this and why, and from how far back one can isolate DNA \u2013 this was all new to me,\u201d says Steyer. For more recently extinct animals, however, fiction is getting closer to fact: \u201cIt was surprising to share that a Russian team is close to cloning a mammoth, in combination with elephant DNA.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"vf-blockquote\"><p>In the process of preparing the talk I approached the topic from different and new perspectives \u2013 I learnt a lot.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs a computational biologist, I thought I knew a lot about the process of genetic sequencing,\u201d adds Zirngibl, \u201cBut once you start thinking about the details, about how and why, many more questions arise.\u201d To capture the audience\u2019s imagination, she explained that DNA sequencing chips contain up to two million holes, each around the width of the finest human hair. \u201cIn the process of preparing the talk I approached the topic from different and new perspectives \u2013 I learnt a lot.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2018Man creates dinosaur\u2019<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Entombed genetic material, impossible DNA puzzles and transgenic eggs makes for fascinating if fanciful science; but the speakers also aimed to highlight the relevance to modern biology and life. The remarks of Jeff Goldblum\u2019s character prompted a discussion about the reality and regulation of cloning: \u201cGod creates dinosaurs \u2013 God destroys dinosaurs \u2013 God creates man \u2013 Man destroys God \u2013 Man creates dinosaurs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"vf-blockquote\"><p>It\u2019s not about changing minds, but informing judgments.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>When <em>Jurassic Park<\/em> debuted, science was still three years away from a landmark in cloning technology: Dolly the sheep, the first cloned adult animal. Since then, cloning and genetic technologies have advanced apace. Describing reproductive and therapeutic cloning in turn, the duo presented the scientific context of this contentious topic. \u201cPeople have too little time to read up on everything, so these events are the perfect opportunity \u2013 it\u2019s not about changing minds, but informing judgments,\u201d Zirngibl explains. \u201cIt\u2019s also important to show that researchers are aware of the ethical rules and regulations, and the implications of their work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"vf-figure wp-block-image alignnone wp-image-6439 size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"620\" height=\"380\" class=\"vf-figure__image\" src=\"http:\/\/news.embl.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/ScienceMovieNight_2.jpg\" alt=\"Anna Steyer was inspired by the interest and openness of the audience. PHOTO: EMBL\/Marietta Schupp<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe were well-prepared for difficult questions about cloning, but the audience was there to be informed and entertained, not to criticise or condemn,\u201d says Steyer. \u201cThe topic of cloning is old hat for many of my colleagues, but to see the interest and openness of the audience was encouraging and inspiring.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2018Don\u2019t eat the tourists\u2019<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Closing the gap between researchers and the general public is a key goal of EMBL\u2019s Science Movie Nights. Hosted in Heidelberg, Germany, in the local language, this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.embl.de\/aboutus\/support-embl\/friends-of-embl\/index.html\">Friends of EMBL<\/a> initiative seeks to illuminate the science in popular cinema, and inspire interest by showing that research is relevant and fun. All 220 seats at the city-centre venue were filled, creating a unique setting for the speakers as well as the gathered crowd. \u201cUntil now, I\u2019d I only presented to my research group,\u201d says Zirngibl, \u201cThis was, by far, my biggest audience.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"vf-blockquote\"><p>I never expected to need to translate \u2018DNA pellet\u2019!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>With careful planning and preparation, the speakers were able to contend with some unexpected challenges \u2013 Steyer reveals: \u201cSince our working language is English, at times it proved surprisingly difficult to find the right German words: I never expected to need to translate \u2018DNA pellet\u2019!\u201d The audience provided a warm reception, and myths were dispelled on all fronts. \u201cWe had a great, responsive crowd, ranging from school children to retirees,\u201d she concludes.
