{"id":63841,"date":"2023-11-07T09:07:21","date_gmt":"2023-11-07T08:07:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/news\/?p=63841"},"modified":"2025-04-01T14:05:54","modified_gmt":"2025-04-01T12:05:54","slug":"enjoying-a-science-day-in-grenoble","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/news\/lab-matters\/enjoying-a-science-day-in-grenoble\/","title":{"rendered":"Enjoying a science day in Grenoble"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Every year in October, France celebrates <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fetedelascience.fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">La F\u00eate de la Science<\/a> \u2013 a week of activities to engage with the general public about science and technology. The event was created in 1991 by the French Ministry of Higher Education and Research.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For more than 30 years, research institutions across the country have joined this initiative with interactive activities to celebrate science and give the participants the opportunity to exchange with researchers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Initiated in 2007 in the framework of La F\u00eate de la Science, the <a href=\"https:\/\/parvis-des-sciences.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Parvis des Sciences<\/a> is a popular event organised in Grenoble by the GIANT campus, combining school visits during the week with a public event on Saturday, largely attended by families.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>EMBL Grenoble and its partner institutes from the European Photon and Neutron (EPN) science Campus \u2013 the European Radiation Synchrotron Facility (ESRF) and the Institut Laue Langevin (ILL) \u2013 traditionally share a booth, with several activities organised for the participants during the public day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Creativity and focus<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This year, EMBL Grenoble invited the youngest participants to a craft activity \u2018Draw a cell\u2019, and the other participants to DNA and protein origami folding \u2013 not as easy as it sounds! You can try it yourself <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yourgenome.org\/activities\/origami-dna\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">at this link<\/a> and fold your own DNA origami! You can also try <a href=\"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/ells\/teachingbase\/how-can-you-fold-a-protein\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the protein origami folding<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the same table, ILL offered participants the chance to build a ball-shaped molecule, while the ESRF organised a dinosaur \u2018dot-to-connect\u2019 drawing activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An amusing result of these crafting activities was to see the participating children\u2019s creativity flourishing spontaneously, as they mixed activities together by sticking feathers and googly eyes \u2018molecule balls\u2019 or making collars out of DNA origami. The event was all about creating positive memories around science and a relaxed space where volunteers could introduce science-related topics to children and their parents.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Participants also enjoyed looking at small crystallised lysosome proteins through EMBL Grenoble\u2019s microscopes while being introduced to protein crystallisation \u2013 a structural biology technique that uses powerful X-rays generated by synchrotrons, like the ESRF.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The visitors were invited to try to fish out a protein crystal with a tiny nylon loop. This field of molecular biology focuses on elucidating at the atomic scale the three-dimensional structure of molecules like proteins or enzymes.<br \/><br \/>\r\nMolecules are the building blocks of life and at the heart of biological processes. Knowing their structure is important information to understand better their specific functions in cells as well as the development of diseases.
