Now there\u2019s so much we can learn!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<div\n  class=\"vf-embed vf-embed--custom-ratio\"\n\n  style=\"--vf-embed-max-width: 100%;\n    --vf-embed-custom-ratio-x: 640;\n    --vf-embed-custom-ratio-y: 360;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/youtube.com\/embed\/2LY8hObVAZI\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"vf-figure__caption\"><em>VIDEO: EMBL\/Petr Strnad<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Starting from the first cell, the EMBL scientists can track each cell\u2019s daughters, grand-daughters, great-granddaughters, and so on, so that, at any given moment, they know each cell\u2019s exact family tree. This has enabled them to identify a crucial turning point in the embryo\u2019s life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When the embryo is a sphere made up of 8 cells, the direction in which they divide next stops being random for just one division. At that single moment, the scientists found, most of the embryo\u2019s cells divide in the same direction: one of the daughter cells forms towards the inside of the embryo, the other towards the outside.
