{"id":60489,"date":"2023-06-28T10:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-06-28T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/news\/?p=60489"},"modified":"2024-03-22T11:20:21","modified_gmt":"2024-03-22T10:20:21","slug":"serbia-becomes-embl-prospect-member","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/news\/lab-matters\/serbia-becomes-embl-prospect-member\/","title":{"rendered":"Serbia becomes EMBL prospect member"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Serbia has become the latest EMBL prospect member state, starting a three-year process toward full membership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Serbia\u2019s Minister of Science, Technological Development and Innovation, Dr Jelena Begovi\u0107, signed the formal Statement of Intent on behalf of the Serbian Government. She said: \u201cSerbia has a strong commitment to improving the overall life quality of our citizens through science and technology, and we are confident that our membership will bring benefits to both Serbia and EMBL.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur national strategy of scientific and technological development of the Republic of Serbia \u2013&nbsp; Power of Knowledge \u2013 includes measures to improve the quality and efficiency of Serbian science, technological development, and innovation, as well as our further integration into the European Research Area. We know these areas are also close to EMBL\u2019s heart,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>EMBL Director General Professor Edith Heard said that Prospect Membership will support Serbia\u2019s goals to expand its research and innovation environment by providing national researchers with full advantage of EMBL\u2019s facilities, training, and professional network, and access to EMBL\u2019s highly sought-after PhD and postdoctoral programmes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEMBL was delighted to host a Serbian visit to our EMBL European Bioinformatics Institute in the UK in January this year, and to follow this up with a visit to Belgrade in April,\u201d Heard said. \u201cOur discussions have already identified many areas for further collaboration \u2013 which will now be made even stronger by Serbia\u2019s Prospect Member status.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Serbia\u2019s prospect membership aligns with EMBL\u2019s mission to bring together and integrate life sciences across Europe and our member states, in order to ensure the development and circulation of talent, collaborations and the shared use of infrastructures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Serbia will attend EMBL\u2019s governing Council during the prospect member phase as an Observer.
