{"id":59765,"date":"2023-05-26T11:52:32","date_gmt":"2023-05-26T09:52:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/news\/?p=59765"},"modified":"2024-03-22T11:07:46","modified_gmt":"2024-03-22T10:07:46","slug":"sharing-knowledge-widening-access-across-europe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/news\/lab-matters\/sharing-knowledge-widening-access-across-europe\/","title":{"rendered":"Sharing knowledge, widening access across Europe"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>EMBL and the European Commission (EC) have agreed to new areas of cooperation with the common goals of ensuring fair and equitable access to scientific research and applying EMBL\u2019s 50 years of expertise in fundamental research to current and emerging health and environmental challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur new two-year implementation plan covers topics ranging from improved pandemic prevention to cleaner oceans and better public engagement with science, to more equitable access to research findings globally,\u201d EMBL Director General Edith Heard said. \u201cOur cooperation with the Commission is part of our wider efforts to apply our expertise in the molecular life sciences to human and planetary health challenges.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking about the discussions at EMBL \u2013 his first visit to a research infrastructure since his appointment in February \u2013 Marc Lema\u00eetre, Director-General of the EC\u2019s Directorate General for Research and Innovation, said that the breadth of topics covered under the 2023-24 implementation plan indicated the importance of the collaboration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEMBL\u2019s broad range of expertise, infrastructures, and capacities \u2013 in biology, high-performance computing, data analysis \u2013 can contribute to a broad range of current European research and innovation priorities,\u201d he said. \u201cAccess to these intergovernmental facilities is vital for European researchers and innovators.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the meeting at EMBL\u2019s Heidelberg headquarters, the two Directors General also discussed the contribution of EMBL\u2019s 2022-26 &#8216;Molecules to Ecosystems&#8217; scientific research programme, including the Planetary Biology flagship <a href=\"http:\/\/www.embl.org\/trec\">Traversing European Coastlines<\/a> (TREC) project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"vf-figure wp-block-image size-full is-style-default\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"600\" class=\"vf-figure__image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/EC-EMBL-visit2-wp.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-59845\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/EC-EMBL-visit2-wp.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.embl.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/EC-EMBL-visit2-wp-300x180.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.embl.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/EC-EMBL-visit2-wp-768x461.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption class=\"vf-figure__caption\">(left to right) Sarah Schmidt, Henriette van Eijl, and Marc Lema\u00eetre from the EU Commission, Directorate General for Research and Innovation, and Edith Heard and Plamena Markova from EMBL. and further develop the European Research Area (ERA), notably concerning \u201cresearch programming, training and mobility of researchers, research infrastructures, management of intellectual property and international collaboration\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Specific topics included in the current Implementation Plan include clinical interpretation of genomics data; Open Science and Research Assessment; new scientific trends in AI, imaging and metagenomics; training in deep tech; Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion; establishing effective research infrastructures for the life sciences;
