EMBL-EBI Open Day 2015 kicked off with high-level talks about services, research, training and career opportunities in bioinformatics. EMBL-EBI Director Rolf Apweiler presented an overview of the institute’s offerings for scientists at all career stages, and Helke Hillebrand, Dean of Graduate Studies at EMBL, shared her knowledge and expertise about the International PhD Programme, postdoctoral fellowships and job opportunities at different EMBL sites. Experts on EMBL-EBI\u2019s many freely available services circulated over the lunch break, fielding questions from the visiting scientists about how to best use life-science data resources and software tools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Half the day was dedicated to parallel sessions, in which visitors could learn more about how EMBL-EBI fits with their scientific interests and career aspirations. “Life as…” career talks, hands-on software demonstrations, tours of campus facilities including the data centre were complemented by an exhibition highlighting careers, training and campus projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe talks were very interesting, and I found out there are lots of career options for researchers and scientists at EMBL-EBI \u2013 not just for bioinformaticians! So I\u2019d be really interested in future opportunities at EMBL-EBI.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFor me, the best part was learning all about EMBL and the different types of research that goes on. It\u2019s great to hear about the interdisciplinary approach to all the research here and the collaborations. It\u2019s definitely been an eye-opener.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cToday I\u2019ve been able to talk with many people about what they work on, and they\u2019ve given me good information about how I can apply for a job within bioinformatics.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
