Prospect membership makes it easier for scientists to take full advantage of EMBL\u2019s facilities, training and professional network, opening up new opportunities for collaboration and innovation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are fully committed to making Europe\u2019s research communities stronger, and that means reaching beyond the traditional borders presented by larger economies and more mature life-science networks,\u201d explains Iain Mattaj, Director General of EMBL. \u201cWe will now enjoy closer collaboration with our colleagues in Lithuania, and I am very grateful to many individuals in the ministries whose enthusiasm and energy have made this happen.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"vf-blockquote\"><p>We are fully committed to making Europe\u2019s research communities stronger, and that means reaching beyond the traditional borders<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Lithuania has a well-developed research and technology community for a country with a population of 3 million, thanks to substantial investment in research initiated in 2007, linked-up science, technology and innovation bodies and the establishment of competitive funding. The country\u2019s prospect membership in EMBL, together with new funding measures introduced by the European Commission to integrate the \u2018New Member States\u2019 with the rest of Europe, will help raise the level of scientific excellence through wider collaboration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lithuania will have observer status in EMBL\u2019s governing body \u2013 the EMBL Council \u2013 for the next three years, after which they can decide to join the organisation as a full member. Lithuanian scientists will be able to access EMBL\u2019s state-of-the-art facilities and services, and their early-career researchers will be eligible for scholarships in EMBL\u2019s highly sought-after PhD and Postdoctoral programmes. An important part of prospect membership will be promoting collaboration between Lithuanian scientists and engineers and EMBL staff and alumni.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"vf-blockquote\"><p>Joining EMBL fits well with our country\u2019s approach to investing in science and enabling innovation.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cParticipating in EMBL will make a big difference to our research community, because it will help us create stronger links internationally and provide more ways for researchers, engineers and creative thinkers to mix, collaborate and find solutions, big and small, to many of our shared challenges,\u201d says Audron\u0117 Pitr\u0117nien\u0117, Lithuanian Minister of Education and Science. \u201cJoining EMBL fits well with our country\u2019s approach to investing in science and enabling innovation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">EMBL member states<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>EMBL prospect member states are now Lithuania, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia. EMBL member states are Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom; associate member states are Argentina and Australia.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sveiki Lietuva!
