{"id":5152,"date":"2015-09-28T11:45:00","date_gmt":"2015-09-28T09:45:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.embl.de\/?p=5152"},"modified":"2024-04-19T15:36:29","modified_gmt":"2024-04-19T13:36:29","slug":"1509_ees16","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/news\/events\/1509_ees16\/","title":{"rendered":"Symposium sails sea of knowledge"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Our knowledge of aquatic microbial eukaryotes \u2013&nbsp;tiny, water-dwelling organisms&nbsp;that, unlike prokaryotes, have cells with inner compartments&nbsp;\u2013 is&nbsp;advancing rapidly.&nbsp;Recent years&nbsp;have seen the completion of global marine field campaigns and major new gene content datasets, alongside the advent of&nbsp;new technologies, methods and concepts across the life&nbsp;sciences.&nbsp;<span style=\"line-height: 1.428571429;\">To underline the emerging treasure trove of knowledge and new resources,<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.428571429;\">&nbsp;<\/span><em style=\"line-height: 1.428571429;\">Science<\/em><span style=\"line-height: 1.428571429;\">&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.428571429;\">recently devoted a special issue to marine plankton.<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.428571429;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.428571429;\">Three major contributions to the biology, ecology and evolution of these organisms \u2013&nbsp;known as protists \u2013&nbsp;are catapulting the field forward: the <a href=\"http:\/\/marinemicroeukaryotes.org\/\">Marine Microbial Eukaryote Transcriptome Sequencing Project<\/a> (MMETSP), the <\/span><a style=\"line-height: 1.428571429;\" href=\"http:\/\/news.embl.de\/science\/1505-tara-oceans\/\">Tara Oceans Expedition<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.428571429;\">, and the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expedicionmalaspina.es\/\"> Malaspina Expedition<\/a>. Although these efforts focus on marine organisms, they have provided an unprecedented wealth of new data to the broader protist research communities, and&nbsp;are enabling the development of new concepts about the interactions of protists with viruses, bacteria and archaea.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.428571429;\">Chris Bowler, one of the scientific coordinators of the Tara Oceans project, together with Jon Kaye from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, assembled a top-notch committee to organise an event in which the results from these projects could be discussed with a wider scientific audience. The&nbsp;EMBO|EMBL Symposia series&nbsp;was the ideal platform for such an exchange, since it specialises in bringing together diverse communities to discuss forward-looking topics and new developments in the life sciences.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a result, &nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.embo-embl-symposia.org\/symposia\/2016\/EES16-01\/\">A New Age of Discovery for Aquatic Microeukaryotes<\/a>&nbsp;will be&nbsp;held 26\u201329 January 2016, at the EMBL Advanced Training Centre in&nbsp;Heidelberg. \u201cOur aim is&nbsp;to stimulate interactions between communities that do not necessarily interact otherwise \u2013 to disseminate the Tara, MMETSP and Malaspina Expedition results, and to exchange knowledge,&#8221; Bowler explains, adding that these projects should serve as starting points for wider discussions. &#8220;The meeting is not meant as a progress report or retreat for the participants of the cooperating project teams, nor will it be limited to&nbsp;the research areas covered by these&nbsp;initiatives,\u201d he stresses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"vf-blockquote\"><p>Our aim is&nbsp;to stimulate interactions between communities that do not necessarily interact otherwise.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The goal of the symposium&nbsp;is to increase the impact of the new knowledge generated from these unique datasets, and to foster new collaborations among aquatic microbial ecologists, evolutionary biologists, oceanographers, limnologists, cell and molecular biologists, geneticists and more.
