She was invited to join as a foreign member of the Natural Science Class in recognition of her academic excellence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters is a learned society composed of elected members. Since its founding nearly 280 years ago, the Academy has been working towards strengthening the position of scholarship in Denmark and advancing basic research and interdisciplinary understanding. It currently has about 250 national and 250 international members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI am deeply grateful to The Royal Danish Academy of Science and Letters for my election,\u201d said Prof. Heard. \u201cIt\u2019s a great honour for me to join it alongside so many highly distinguished scientists. I look forward to working with the Academy on furthering and promoting fundamental research and interdisciplinarity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prof. Heard has been the Director General of EMBL since 2019. She is also Professor at the Coll\u00e8ge de France, occupying the Chair of Epigenetics and Cellular Memory. As a researcher, she focuses her studies on epigenetic processes, such as X-chromosome inactivation. Prof. Heard is also a Fellow of the <a href=\"https:\/\/royalsociety.org\/people\/edith-heard-11603\/\">Royal Society<\/a>, as well as an elected member of several prestigious societies and institutions, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/news\/lab-matters\/embl-director-general-elected-to-us-national-academy-of-sciences\/\">US National Academy of Sciences<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/news\/lab-matters\/edith-heard-elected-to-the-german-national-academy-of-sciences-leopoldina\/\">German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/news\/lab-matters\/embl-dg-joins-national-academy-of-medicine-membership\/\">US National Academy of Medicine<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>EMBL has extensive collaboration with Denmark and its scientific organisations. One prominent example is <a href=\"https:\/\/dandrite.au.dk\/\">the Danish Research Institute of Translational Neuroscience (DANDRITE)<\/a>. It is a member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/partnerships\/remote\/nordic\/\">Nordic EMBL Partnership for Molecular Medicine<\/a>, which aims to connect EMBL and Nordic research institutions focusing on diverse approaches to molecular medicine, including infection biology, genomics, and translational neuroscience.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>EMBL Director General Edith Heard has been elected as a foreign member of The Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters in recognition of her academic excellence.
