The programme, which officially starts this year, should help start a new era for molecular life sciences in Europe and provide new avenues for collaboration and trailblazing research and innovation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe planet\u2019s most challenging problems require all hands on deck,\u201d said Edith Heard, EMBL Director General. \u201cToday, molecular biologists have unprecedented tools and talent to explore the mechanisms and diversity of life in context and across scales, and to rise up to human and planetary health challenges.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On 24 November 2021, the anniversary of the publication of Darwin\u2019s <em>Origin of Species<\/em>, EMBL\u2019s Council of Delegates approved the \u2018Molecules to Ecosystems\u2019 programme for 2022-2026. This strategic document expands EMBL\u2019s scope to understanding ecosystems at the molecular level and studying life in the context of its environment. The result is fundamental research that informs potential solutions for some of society\u2019s biggest challenges, such as an irreversible loss of biodiversity, antimicrobial resistance, pollution, climate change, food security, and emergent pathogens.<\/p>\n\n\n<div\n  class=\"vf-embed vf-embed--custom-ratio\"\n\n  style=\"--vf-embed-max-width: 100%;\n    --vf-embed-custom-ratio-x: 640;\n    --vf-embed-custom-ratio-y: 360;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Hb8oWM-NQLE\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\".vf-u-margin__bottom--400\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>EMBL\u2019s programme is the strategic plan and vision that underpins EMBL research, services, training, and operations. Under the aegis of this new programme, EMBL will consider the molecular basis of life in its broadest sense \u2013 not only in the context of cells and whole organisms, but also within communities where organisms interact with each other and respond to constantly changing physical and chemical conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Building on past expertise<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In recent years, EMBL researchers have already made strides towards scientific discoveries that follow the spirit of the new programme. Some of the projects EMBL has already begun pursuing and will expand upon under the aegis of the new programme include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>EMBL has initiated and participated in collaborative expeditions with the Tara Oceans Consortium to monitor oceans around the world, revealing an extraordinary and previously unexplored biodiversity. Studying the impact of climate change on <strong>biodiversity<\/strong> is vitally important, given the role many ecosystems play in regulating climate.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Researchers at EMBL have also shown that the relative abundance of bacteria and fungi in terrestrial topsoil is critical for nutrient cycling and may have a profound impact on the appearance of <strong>antibiotic resistance<\/strong> genes. Understanding the molecular basis of antibiotic resistance transmission in natural contexts provides a fundamental understanding with wider application, such as potentially assisting drug discovery and treatment approaches.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>EMBL scientists have also developed <strong>computational tools<\/strong>, including lightweight apps, to enable <strong>genome-based surveillance of infectious diseases<\/strong>. Scientists across EMBL and its member states are carrying out a range of studies to study the emergence and spread of pathogens. This is highly relevant, given that biodiversity loss facilitates the emergence of new pathogens and frequently increases rates of transmission.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Finally, in the <strong>context of human health<\/strong>, a plethora of studies now demonstrate correlations between gut microbiome composition, nutrition, and common disorders such as metabolic disease or cancer. The hope is that these correlations can translate into therapies using mechanism-based approaches.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>EMBL researchers will continue to explore these avenues, in addition to pursuing new questions made possible under the new programme with its wider scope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The tools to study molecular biology in context<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Pushing the boundaries of molecular biology research requires EMBL scientists to embrace new tools and innovations as well as being part of that technological innovation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOver recent decades, there have been remarkable molecular insights based on model organisms ranging from bacteria to animals, under defined lab conditions. However, life does not happen in isolation,\u201d Professor Heard said. \u201cFrom humans in cities, to plankton in oceans or microbes in topsoil or in the human gut, every organism in nature is part of a complex and dynamic ecosystem, and we need to grasp the molecular mechanisms of life in these natural contexts.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Molecular biologists have now acquired an array of tools to probe and decipher the molecular mechanisms that underlie organisms\u2019 variability and survival, not just in a lab setting but in the wild. A variety of imaging tools can capture \u2018snapshots\u2019 of organisms, tissues, cells, and their inner organelles <em>in situ<\/em>. Scientists can sequence full genomes, analyse an organism\u2019s complement of proteins, metabolites, and transcriptomes in different physiological or diseased states, and offer detailed information about these entities\u2019 structure and function.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"vf-blockquote | vf-u-margin__bottom--600 vf-u-margin__top--600\">\n  <div>\n    <div>\n      Molecular biologists have always been interested in understanding the underpinning mechanisms of life.\u00a0Now, we are at a critical turning point where we can help illuminate how life works in an interconnected, constantly changing world.    <\/div>\n    \n          <footer class=\"vf-u-margin__top--600\">\n      \n      <div class=\"vf-blockquote_author\">\n        \u2013 EMBL Director General Edith Heard      <\/div>\n\n      \n      <div class=\"vf-blockquote_author__details\"><\/div>\n    <\/footer>\n      <\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, new technologies are being developed to measure ecosystem components \u2013 from molecules to cells, organisms, populations, and communities \u2013 in an unprecedented fashion and while factoring in chemical and physical environmental parameters. Advances in computational power and artificial intelligence also enable rigorous analysis and creative integration of these data. This tremendous technological progress in life sciences can now be coupled with the capacity to gather and analyse data of greater scope, resolution, and quality than ever before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This means that scientists can collect measurements of environmental context systematically, answer fundamental questions about life in context, and integrate a new level of complexity and understanding into the study of biology. &nbsp;With the new programme, EMBL aims to serve as a nexus for this interdisciplinary, collaborative approach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Building capacity at EMBL and beyond<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Through this new programme, EMBL will also build on its existing and globally recognised expertise in areas such as molecular and cellular biology, structural biology and developmental biology, and expand into new areas including planetary biology, human ecosystems, infection biology, and microbial ecosystems. Developing advanced data sciences and theoretical approaches will be central to the research strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new programme will expand EMBL\u2019s multidisciplinary and collaborative approach to its research, services, and training. Through close collaborations across scientific domains and within all of EMBL\u2019s member states, EMBL will build bridges with new disciplines, including ecology and epidemiology, while keeping a firm foundation in molecular biology. EMBL will also look to train a new generation of interdisciplinary scientists who will address real-life scientific questions and prepare for future challenges. And while this programme expands EMBL\u2019s purview in certain areas, its research mission remains the same: to better understand the molecular basis of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the next five years, EMBL will increasingly add to the resources it provides researchers to facilitate this expansion of mission and connect to new expertise thanks to scientists from member states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, by collaborating with ecologists, zoologists, environmental scientists, and epidemiologists, EMBL will launch a new mobile laboratory service with state-of-the-art molecular technologies to explore land-water interfaces across Europe. This will be done together with the European Marine Biological Resource Centre and other national stakeholders.&nbsp; It\u2019s this kind of collaboration that can maximise European science funding while broadening research perspective in this new era of European life science research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, the new EMBL Imaging Centre will increase capabilities and expand training opportunities, attracting users from all over Europe, while macromolecular crystallography (MX) and small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) at EMBL\u2019s Grenoble and Hamburg sites will pilot new services with input from the structural biology community at large.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe advances in technology that will allow EMBL\u2019s evolution will also raise the capacity of our collaborators in other disciplines, such as ecologists, epidemiologists, and engineers,\u201d Professor Heard said. \u201cMolecular biologists have always been interested in understanding the underpinning mechanisms of life.&nbsp; Now, we are at a critical turning point where we can help illuminate how life works in an interconnected, constantly changing world. Mit diesem strategischen Dokument wird der Aufgabenbereich des EMBL auf das Verst\u00e4ndnis von \u00d6kosystemen auf molekularer Ebene und die Untersuchung des Lebens im Kontext seiner Umwelt ausgeweitet. Das Ergebnis ist Grundlagenforschung, die potenzielle L\u00f6sungen f\u00fcr einige der gr\u00f6\u00dften gesellschaftlichen Herausforderungen unserer Zeit, wie z. Unter der \u00c4gide dieses neuen Programms wird das EMBL die molekularen Grundlagen des Lebens im weitesten Sinne untersuchen &#8211; nicht nur im Kontext von Zellen und ganzen Organismen, sondern auch innerhalb von Gemeinschaften, in denen Organismen miteinander interagieren, und auf sich st\u00e4ndig ver\u00e4ndernde physikalische und chemische Bedingungen reagieren.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Auf etablierte Expertise aufbauen<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bereits in den letzten Jahren haben sich EMBL-Forscher*innen aufgemacht zu wissenschaftlichen Entdeckungen, die dem Geist des neuen Programms entsprechen. Einige der Projekte, die innerhalb des EMBL bereits angesto\u00dfen wurden und nun weiter ausgebaut werden sollen, sind Folgende:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Das EMBL hat gemeinsame Expeditionen mit dem Tara Oceans Konsortium initiiert und sich daran beteiligt, die Ozeane unseres Planeten zu beobachten und dabei eine au\u00dfergew\u00f6hnliche und bisher unerforschte Artenvielfalt zu entdecken. Die Erforschung der Auswirkungen des Klimawandels auf die <strong>biologische Vielfalt<\/strong> ist angesichts der Rolle, die viele \u00d6kosysteme bei der Klimaregulierung spielen, von entscheidender Bedeutung.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Forscher*innen am EMBL haben aufgezeigt, dass sich die Zusammensetzung von Bakterien- und Pilzpopulationen in der obersten Bodenschicht entscheidend auf den N\u00e4hrstoffkreislauf auswirkt und damit einen gro\u00dfen Einfluss auf das Auftreten von Antibiotikaresistenzgenen aus\u00fcben kann. Das Verst\u00e4ndnis der molekularen Grundlagen bei der \u00dcbertragung von <strong>Antibiotikaresistenzen<\/strong> in der Natur erm\u00f6glicht auch eine breit gef\u00e4cherte Anwendung dieser Erkenntnisse, z. B. bei der Entwicklung von Medikamenten und Behandlungsans\u00e4tzen.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>EMBL-Wissenschaftler*innen haben dar\u00fcber hinaus <strong>computergest\u00fctzte Werkzeuge<\/strong> entwickelt, darunter Anwendungen, die eine <strong>genombasierte \u00dcberwachung von Infektionskrankheiten<\/strong> erm\u00f6glichen. Forschende innerhalb des EMBL und seiner Mitgliedsstaaten f\u00fchren eine Reihe von Studien durch, die die Entstehung und Verbreitung von Krankheitserregern untersuchen. Diese Studien sind besonders relevant, da der Verlust der biologischen Artenvielfalt das Auftreten neuer Krankheitserreger beg\u00fcnstigt und h\u00e4ufig auch die \u00dcbertragungsraten erh\u00f6ht.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Im Kontext der <strong>menschlichen Gesundheit <\/strong>gibt es mittlerweile zahlreiche Studien, die Zusammenh\u00e4nge zwischen der Zusammensetzung des Darmmikrobioms, der Ern\u00e4hrung und weit verbreiteten Krankheiten wie Stoffwechselerkrankungen oder Krebs nachweisen. Es besteht die Hoffnung, dass diese Zusammenh\u00e4nge mit Hilfe neuer Ans\u00e4tze, die die zugrunde liegenden Mechanismen erforschen, in konkrete Therapien umgesetzt werden k\u00f6nnen.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Die Forscherinnen und Forscher des EMBL werden diese Wege auch weiterhin beschreiten und k\u00f6nnen dar\u00fcber hinaus innerhalb des erweiterten Forschungsrahmens im neuen Programm auch neuen Fragestellungen nachgehen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Die molekularbiologischen Werkzeuge zur Untersuchung des Lebens im Kontext<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Um die Grenzen der molekularbiologischen Forschung zu erweitern, ist die die Anwendung neuer Instrumente und Innovationen genauso notwendig wie selbst Teil technologischer Innovation sein.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;In den letzten Jahrzehnten wurden bemerkenswerte molekulare Erkenntnisse auf der Grundlage von Modellorganismen &#8211; von Bakterien bis zu Tieren &#8211; unter definierten Laborbedingungen gewonnen. Das Leben findet jedoch nicht in Isolation statt,&#8221; sagte Professor Heard. &#8220;Vom Menschen in der Stadt, \u00fcber Plankton in den Ozeanen, bis hin zu den Mikroben im Mutterboden oder im menschlichen Darm ist jeder Organismus in der Natur Teil eines komplexen und dynamischen \u00d6kosystems, und wir m\u00fcssen die molekularen Mechanismen des Lebens in diesen nat\u00fcrlichen Zusammenh\u00e4ngen verstehen.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Molekularbiolog*innen verf\u00fcgen heute \u00fcber eine Reihe von Instrumenten, die es ihnen erm\u00f6glichen, molekulare Mechanismen zu untersuchen und zu entschl\u00fcsseln, die der Variabilit\u00e4t und dem \u00dcberleben von Organismen zugrunde liegen \u2013 und dies nicht nur im Labor, sondern auch in der Natur. Eine Vielzahl von bildgebenden Verfahren kann Momentaufnahmen von Organismen, Geweben, Zellen und deren inneren Organellen produzieren. Ebenso sind Forschende mittlerweile in der Lage, vollst\u00e4ndige Genome zu sequenzieren, die Zusammensetzung von Proteinen, Metaboliten und Transkriptomen eines Organismus in verschiedenen physiologischen oder kranken Zust\u00e4nden zu analysieren, und detaillierte Informationen \u00fcber die Struktur und Funktion dieser Bausteine des Lebens zu erlangen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"vf-blockquote | vf-u-margin__bottom--600 vf-u-margin__top--600\">\n  <div>\n    <div>\n      Molekularbiolog*innen waren immer schon daran interessiert, die dem Leben zugrunde liegenden Mechanismen zu verstehen. Heute stehen wir an einem kritischen Wendepunkt, an dem wir das Leben in einer vernetzten, sich st\u00e4ndig ver\u00e4ndernden Welt beleuchten k\u00f6nnen. Die Weiterentwicklung der Rechenleistung von Computern und der Anwendung K\u00fcnstlicher Intelligenz erm\u00f6glichen zudem eine exakte Auswertung und innovative Integration dieser Daten. Durch diese enormen technologischen Fortschritte in den Biowissenschaften k\u00f6nnen heute Daten von gr\u00f6\u00dferem Umfang, h\u00f6herer Aufl\u00f6sung und besserer Qualit\u00e4t als je zuvor gesammelt und analysiert werden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All dies bedeutet, dass Wissenschaftler*innen Umweltkontexte systematisch erfassen, grundlegende Fragen \u00fcber das Leben im Kontext beantworten, und eine neue Ebene der Komplexit\u00e4t und des Verst\u00e4ndnisses in die Biologieforschung integrieren k\u00f6nnen. Durch das neue Programm will das EMBL als Schnittstelle f\u00fcr diesen interdisziplin\u00e4ren, kooperativen Ansatz dienen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Aufbau von Kapazit\u00e4ten am EMBL und dar\u00fcber hinaus<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mit dem neuen Programm wird das EMBL auch auf seiner bestehenden und weltweit anerkannten Expertise in Bereichen wie der Molekular- und Zellbiologie sowie der Struktur- und der Entwicklungsbiologie aufbauen, und in neue Forschungsbereiche wie der Biologie unseres Planeten, menschlicher und mikrobieller \u00d6kosysteme, sowie Infektionsbiologie expandieren. Die Weiterentwicklung angewandter Datenwissenschaften und theoretischer Ans\u00e4tze wird dabei im Mittelpunkt der Forschungsstrategie stehen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Das neue Programm wird den multidisziplin\u00e4ren und kollaborativen Ansatz des EMBL in der Forschung, den Dienstleistungen und in der Aus- und Weiterbildung erweitern. Durch eine enge Zusammenarbeit \u00fcber verschiedene wissenschaftliche Bereiche hinweg und innerhalb aller EMBL-Mitgliedsstaaten wird das EMBL Br\u00fccken zu neuen Disziplinen wie der \u00d6kologie und der Epidemiologie schlagen und gleichzeitig seine solide Grundlage in der Molekularbiologie bewahren. Ebenso wird das EMBL die Aus- und Weiterbildung einer neuen Generation interdisziplin\u00e4rer Wissenschaftler*innen, die sich mit realen wissenschaftlichen Fragen befassen und sich auf k\u00fcnftige Herausforderungen vorbereiten, nicht aus den Augen verlieren. Auch wenn das neue Programm den Aufgabenbereich des EMBL in bestimmten Bereichen erweitert, bleibt sein Forschungsauftrag derselbe: die molekularen Grundlagen des Lebens besser zu verstehen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In den n\u00e4chsten f\u00fcnf Jahren wird das EMBL nicht nur die Ressourcen, die es Forscher*innen zur Verf\u00fcgung stellt, zunehmend erweitern, um die Ausweitung seines Forschungsauftrags voranzutreiben. Es wird gleicherma\u00dfen seine Expertise durch enge Verbindungen mit Wissenschaftler*innen aus den EMBL-Mitgliedstaaten ausbauen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So wird das EMBL zum Beispiel in Zusammenarbeit mit \u00d6kolog*innen, Zoolog*innen, Umweltwissenschaftler*innen und Epidemiolog*innen einen neuen mobilen Labordienst mit modernsten molekularen Technologien einrichten, um K\u00fcstenbereiche in ganz Europa zu untersuchen. In diesem Projekt kooperiert das EMBL mit dem European Marine Biological Resource Centre und weiteren nationalen Akteuren. Durch diese Art der Zusammenarbeit kann europ\u00e4ische Wissenschaftsfinanzierung maximiert, und gleichzeitig die Forschungsperspektive in dieser neuen \u00c4ra europ\u00e4ischer biowissenschaftlichen Forschung erweitert werden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ebenso wird das neue EMBL Imaging Centre seine Kapazit\u00e4ten und Ausbildungsm\u00f6glichkeiten ausbauen und so Nutzer*innen aus ganz Europa anziehen. Ce document strat\u00e9gique \u00e9largit le champ d&#8217;action de l&#8217;EMBL \u00e0 la compr\u00e9hension des \u00e9cosyst\u00e8mes au niveau mol\u00e9culaire et \u00e0 l&#8217;\u00e9tude de la vie dans son contexte environnemental. Nous devons saisir les m\u00e9canismes mol\u00e9culaires de la vie dans ces contextes naturels.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Les biologistes mol\u00e9culaires disposent d\u00e9sormais d&#8217;une panoplie d&#8217;outils pour sonder et d\u00e9chiffrer les m\u00e9canismes mol\u00e9culaires qui sous-tendent la variabilit\u00e9 et la survie des organismes, non seulement en laboratoire mais aussi dans la nature. Divers outils d&#8217;imagerie permettent de prendre des &#8220;instantan\u00e9s&#8221; d&#8217;organismes, de tissus, de cellules et de leurs organites internes <em>in situ<\/em>. Este documento estrat\u00e9gico ampl\u00eda el alcance del EMBL para comprender los ecosistemas a nivel molecular y estudiar la vida en el contexto de su entorno. En el nuevo programa, el EMBL estudiar\u00e1 las bases moleculares de la vida en su sentido m\u00e1s amplio, no s\u00f3lo en el contexto de las c\u00e9lulas y los organismos completos, sino tambi\u00e9n dentro de las comunidades en las que los organismos interact\u00faan entre s\u00ed y responden a condiciones f\u00edsicas y qu\u00edmicas en constante cambio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Aprovechando la experiencia del pasado<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>En los \u00faltimos a\u00f1os, el personal investigador del EMBL ya ha dado pasos hacia descubrimientos cient\u00edficos que siguen el esp\u00edritu del nuevo programa. Algunos de los proyectos que el EMBL ya ha comenzado a realizar y que se ampliar\u00e1n gracias al nuevo programa son los siguientes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>El EMBL ha iniciado y participado en expediciones en colaboraci\u00f3n con el Consorcio Tara Oceans para monitorizar los oc\u00e9anos de todo el mundo, revelando una biodiversidad extraordinaria y hasta ahora inexplorada. Sin embargo, la vida no ocurre de forma aislada&#8221;, asegura la Profesora Heard. &#8220;Desde los seres humanos en las ciudades, hasta el plancton en los oc\u00e9anos o los microbios en la superficie del suelo o en el intestino humano, todos los organismos de la naturaleza forman parte de un ecosistema complejo y din\u00e1mico, y necesitamos comprender los mecanismos moleculares de la vida en estos contextos naturales&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Los bi\u00f3logos moleculares se han dotado de toda una serie de herramientas para investigar y descifrar los mecanismos moleculares que subyacen a la variabilidad y la supervivencia de los organismos, no s\u00f3lo en el laboratorio sino tambi\u00e9n en la naturaleza. Diferentes herramientas de imagen pueden capturar &#8220;instant\u00e1neas&#8221; de organismos, tejidos, c\u00e9lulas y sus org\u00e1nulos internos <em>in situ<\/em>. A trav\u00e9s de una estrecha colaboraci\u00f3n en todos los \u00e1mbitos cient\u00edficos y dentro de todos los estados miembros del EMBL, \u00e9ste tender\u00e1 puentes con nuevas disciplinas, como la ecolog\u00eda y la epidemiolog\u00eda, manteniendo al mismo tiempo una base firme en la biolog\u00eda molecular. El EMBL tambi\u00e9n tratar\u00e1 de formar a una nueva generaci\u00f3n de cient\u00edficas y cient\u00edficos de manera interdisciplinar, que aborden cuestiones cient\u00edficas de la vida real y se preparen para los retos del futuro. Tambi\u00e9n se pondr\u00e1 en marcha un nuevo servicio de laboratorio m\u00f3vil con tecnolog\u00edas moleculares de vanguardia para explorar las interfaces tierra-agua en toda Europa. Esto se har\u00e1 junto con el Centro Europeo de Recursos Biol\u00f3gicos Marinos y otros colaboradores nacionales.
