{"id":4569,"date":"2015-07-13T15:09:53","date_gmt":"2015-07-13T13:09:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.embl.de\/?p=4569"},"modified":"2024-04-19T15:11:09","modified_gmt":"2024-04-19T13:11:09","slug":"1507-ei3pod","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/news\/lab-matters\/1507-ei3pod\/","title":{"rendered":"EIPOD goes cubic"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Since its inception in 2007, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.embl.de\/training\/postdocs\/08-eipod\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">EMBL Interdisciplinary Postdocs (EIPOD)<\/a> initiative has fostered interdisciplinary research projects each involving two or more research groups from across the Laboratory. As of July, EIPOD aptly becomes EI<sub>3<\/sub>POD, with the addition of two new dimensions: \u2018inter-institutional\u2019 and \u2018inter-sectorial\u2019, enabling collaborations with other research institutes and with industry. With \u20ac12.8 million in support from a COFUND grant under the European Commission\u2019s Horizon 2020 Marie Sk\u0142odowska-Curie Actions, the EI<sub>3<\/sub>POD scheme maintains the strong basic research path while encouraging interdisciplinary research that reaches beyond institutional and academic borders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>EIPOD fellows work on cutting-edge projects that make the most of the unique research environments at EMBL\u2019s five sites, and the new aspects look to connect fellows further with industry&nbsp;and academic partners from around the world. The evolved programme aims to diversify career pathways and international mobility of fellows. It provides new \u2018inter-institutional\u2019 opportunities to work between scientific groups at EMBL and another research partners, or \u2018inter-sectorial\u2019 prospects that involve industry collaboration or active participation in commercialising technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"vf-blockquote\"><p>Fellows learn different skill sets across disciplines, which gives them an excellent foundation on which to build their career.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>EI<sub>3<\/sub>POD is designed to reflect the wide range of career opportunities open to fellows. \u201cThe value of an interdisciplinary programme is that fellows learn different skill sets across disciplines, which gives them an excellent foundation on which to build their career,\u201d says Anne Ephrussi, Head of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.embl.de\/training\/eicat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">EMBL International Centre for Advanced Training<\/a> and the Developmental Biology Unit. \u201cThe academic route is one excellent option \u2013 the new programme will help interested fellows gain insight into the relevant careers on offer within industry as well.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Training and guidance<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To help EI<sub>3<\/sub>POD fellows plan for their future, the new programme comes with a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.embl.de\/training\/postdocs\/08-eipod\/EI3POD-programme-overview\/training\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">training curriculum<\/a> targeting non-scientific skills and offering dedicated career-development support. The curriculum includes six days focusing on subjects such as intellectual property and entrepreneurship in the life sciences, research ethics, outreach and public engagement, and gender issues in research and science.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Training will be delivered in close collaboration with the programme&#8217;s business partners&nbsp;and, for fellows involved in a project with an applied angle, will include a summer school on entrepreneurship and commercialisation of research, run by industry partners and EMBL\u2019s technology transfer&nbsp;experts,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.embl-em.de\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">EMBLEM<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"vf-blockquote\"><p>A dedicated career advisor can help fellows understand what kind of career would meet their needs.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>A career development advisor will provide one-to-one support to help fellows consider potential careers and take the necessary steps to prepare for them. Forward planning is very important, says EMBL Academic Coordinator and Dean of Graduate Studies Helke Hillebrand. \u201cThree years may seem like a long time, but it passes very quickly,\u201d she explains. \u201cA dedicated career advisor can help fellows understand what kind of career would meet their needs, what options are open to them and help them start to plan and prepare for their next step well in advance.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As one of EMBL\u2019s flagship training initiatives, the EIPOD programme has a track record in pioneering new mentoring and training formats. \u201cWith the new training curriculum of the EI<sub>3<\/sub>POD initiative we are now able to explore additional new paths in preparing EIPODs for their future careers,\u201d says Detlev Arendt, Academic Mentor Postdoctoral Training and Group Leader at EMBL.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese experiences will pave the way for offering pioneering training approaches to the broader EMBL fellow community in the future,\u201d adds Hillebrand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">EI<sub>3<\/sub>POD partnerships<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The programme has already attracted a number of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.embl.de\/training\/postdocs\/08-eipod\/EI3POD-programme-overview\/academic-and-industry-partners\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">partners from academia and industry<\/a>, including research institutions in Argentina, Australia, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Spain, Sweden and the USA. Eight of the companies involved are members of the EMBL Corporate Partnership Programme or the EMBL-EBI Industry Programme, including AstraZeneca, GSK, Leica, Merck, Nikon and Unilever. More academic and commercial partners are expected to join as the programme progresses and research themes emerge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"vf-blockquote\"><p>As the project progresses, it might become appropriate to involve an external partner or start to think about commercialisation.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The programme\u2019s flexibility means that external partners can be brought into a project at any stage. \u201cA fellow might start with a classic \u2018interdisciplinary\u2019 project, working across two or more EMBL research groups,\u201d explains Brenda Stride, EMBL Senior Programme Administrator, \u201cBut as the project progresses, it might become appropriate to involve an external partner or start to think about commercialisation. This is all possible within the flexible structure of the new programme.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The EI<sub>3<\/sub>POD grant runs from 2015 until 2020, offering 20 fully funded three-year positions per year in 2015, 16 and 17.
