{"id":45248,"date":"2021-12-16T10:38:09","date_gmt":"2021-12-16T09:38:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/news\/?p=45248"},"modified":"2025-05-07T14:43:07","modified_gmt":"2025-05-07T12:43:07","slug":"open-science","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/news\/lab-matters\/open-science\/","title":{"rendered":"Open science at EMBL: a transparent way of working"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>EMBL has released a new Open Science Policy as part of its ongoing commitment to drive trust, transparency, and more inclusive research across the life sciences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/about\/open-science\/\" target=\"_blank\">\n<button class=\"vf-button vf-button--primary\">Read the full Open Science Policy<\/button>\n<\/a>\n<!--\/vf-button-->\n\n\n\n\n<p>The Open Science Policy will expand on existing practice, and contribute to positive culture change across EMBL and more widely. To ensure this, the policy covers research assessment and fair attribution of credit. The policy also puts in place guidelines for EMBL staff regarding open and timely access to research results via publications, data, and software.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOpen science has always been part of the fabric of EMBL,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/people\/person\/38ca76e2cdffb6767ef5930d08cb31d12f3b7f71ef9e5b343d8ddcd8d2599804\/\">Edith Heard, Director General of EMBL<\/a>. \u201cI am very pleased that we can announce this new policy, at a time when the world needs to share knowledge and accelerate research more than ever before.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a>Public availability of research outputs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The policy states that all EMBL research publications should be made openly available in <a href=\"https:\/\/europepmc.org\/\">Europe PMC<\/a>. There is also a requirement to publish preprints of all manuscripts in a <a href=\"https:\/\/europepmc.org\/Preprints#preprint-servers\">preprint server indexed by Europe PMC<\/a>. In addition, data should be submitted as complete datasets and comply with FAIR principles, while software created as a research output or to support EMBL services should be open source by default.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOpen science drives better research,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ebi.ac.uk\/about\/people\/johanna-mcentyre\">Jo McEntyre, Associate Director of EMBL-EBI Services<\/a>. \u201cIn light of the COVID-19 pandemic, this is clearer now than ever before. When we make scientific publications and data produced from research openly accessible and freely available as soon as possible to the global scientific community, we accelerate the rate of discovery.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a>Research assessment and fair attribution of credit<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>All EMBL staff publishing research will be required to maintain an <a href=\"https:\/\/orcid.org\/\">ORCID iD<\/a>, and publications should acknowledge EMBL \u2013 both as affiliation and source of funding \u2013 as well as any external grants used to conduct the research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Research assessment across the organisation will value all research outputs, and not use journal impact factors as a metric for success.
