New members are elected by existing academy members, through a process that recognises individuals who have made major contributions to the advancement of medical science, healthcare, and public health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reacting to the news, Professor Heard said, \u201cI am honoured to have been elected to the National Academy of Medicine. The organisation\u2019s work to encourage research, address critical issues in science, and boost public understanding of STEM subjects, is vital. These aims are shared by EMBL, which has for almost 50 years provided the world with scientific knowledge, skilled researchers, and technological advancement.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Established as the Institute of Medicine in 1970, the National Academy of Medicine addresses critical issues related to health, science, and medicine, in order to inspire positive policies and action across these
