{"id":43068,"date":"2021-10-08T10:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-10-08T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/news\/?p=43068"},"modified":"2024-03-22T15:09:43","modified_gmt":"2024-03-22T14:09:43","slug":"embl-and-ifremer-cooperate-to-advance-ocean-sciences","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/news\/lab-matters\/embl-and-ifremer-cooperate-to-advance-ocean-sciences\/","title":{"rendered":"EMBL and Ifremer cooperate to advance ocean sciences"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Edith Heard, EMBL Director General, and Fran\u00e7ois Houllier, President and Managing Director of the French Research Institute for Exploitation of the Sea (Ifremer), have signed a memorandum of understanding to encourage scientific collaboration between their respective organisations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wwz.ifremer.fr\/en\/\">Ifremer<\/a> is a French public organisation that is internationally recognised as a pioneer in ocean sciences. Its goals include protecting and restoring the ocean, sustainably managing marine resources, and sharing ocean data, information, and knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Data sharing will be an important aspect of the collaboration between the two organisations. Ifremer has already collected a large amount of marine data and can bring sea research expertise and infrastructure, while EMBL has developed technologies to undertake multidimensional measurements, such as advanced omics and imaging technologies, which also incorporate environmental variables.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn the framework of the new EMBL Programme, and specifically with regards to planetary biology, many valuable research collaborations could arise from and build on this data,\u201d explained Professor Heard. \u201cThis is particularly interesting considering EMBL\u2019s plans for a European coastline expedition, which could tie in neatly with Ifremer projects.\u201c<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;EMBL has remarkable skills in molecular biology,&#8221; adds Fran\u00e7ois Houllier. &#8220;Reciprocally, Ifremer has a strong base of expertise in marine biology and ecology. Thanks to our partnership, we will be able to develop new approaches, such as the study of environmental DNA in the deep sea and coastal marine environments, which Ifremer has been studying for a long time, or for the evaluation of fisheries resources.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Researchers from both organisations will be able to join forces, particularly in the areas of coastal and marine ecosystems, biodiversity, and host\u2013pathogen\u2013environment interactions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This collaboration, along with the perspectives it offers, is built on past interactions and discussions between EMBL and Ifremer, as well as other institutes working on biodiversity and ocean sciences, like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.embrc.eu\/\">European Marine Biological Resource Centre (EMBRC)<\/a>. Most recently, an <a href=\"https:\/\/premc.org\/marine-edna\/\">online Marine eDNA Workshop<\/a> has been organised in April 2021 by EMBL, Ifremer, and the Tara Ocean Foundation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"vf-divider\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"french\">Coop\u00e9ration entre l&#8217;EMBL et l&#8217;Ifremer pour faire progresser les sciences oc\u00e9aniques<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Les deux organisations ont sign\u00e9 un protocole d&#8217;entente pour soutenir la coop\u00e9ration scientifique dans l\u2019exploration des \u00e9cosyst\u00e8mes c\u00f4tiers et oc\u00e9aniques, l\u2019\u00e9tude de la biodiversit\u00e9 marine et la compr\u00e9hension des interactions h\u00f4te\u2013pathog\u00e8ne\u2013environnement en milieu marin.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Edith Heard, directrice g\u00e9n\u00e9rale de l&#8217;EMBL, et Fran\u00e7ois Houllier, pr\u00e9sident et directeur g\u00e9n\u00e9ral de l&#8217;Institut Fran\u00e7ais de Recherche pour l&#8217;Exploitation de la Mer (Ifremer), ont sign\u00e9 un protocole d&#8217;entente visant \u00e0 encourager la collaboration scientifique entre leurs organisations respectives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>L&#8217;<a href=\"https:\/\/wwz.ifremer.fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ifremer<\/a> est un organisme public fran\u00e7ais, reconnu au niveau international comme pionnier dans le domaine des sciences de la mer. Ses objectifs portent sur la protection et la restauration de l&#8217;oc\u00e9an, la gestion durable des ressources marines, ainsi que le partage des donn\u00e9es, des informations et des connaissances sur l&#8217;oc\u00e9an.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Le partage des donn\u00e9es va repr\u00e9senter un volet important de la collaboration entre les deux organisations. L&#8217;Ifremer a d\u00e9j\u00e0 collect\u00e9 une grande quantit\u00e9 de donn\u00e9es marines et va pouvoir apporter son expertise et ses infrastructures en sciences oc\u00e9aniques. Par ailleurs, l&#8217;EMBL a d\u00e9velopp\u00e9 des technologies permettant d&#8217;entreprendre des mesures multidimensionnelles, telles que des technologies avanc\u00e9es en imagerie et en omiques, et d&#8217;int\u00e9grer des variables environnementales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Ces donn\u00e9es peuvent donner lieu \u00e0 d\u2019importantes collaborations en mati\u00e8re de recherche dans le cadre du nouveau programme de l\u2019EMBL, et plus sp\u00e9cifiquement en biologie plan\u00e9taire,&#8221; explique le professeur Heard. &#8220;Ceci est particuli\u00e8rement int\u00e9ressant compte tenu des intentions de l&#8217;EMBL de lancer une exp\u00e9dition scientifique sur le littoral europ\u00e9en, qui pourrait s&#8217;articuler parfaitement avec les projets de l&#8217;Ifremer.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cL&#8217;EMBL a des comp\u00e9tences remarquables en biologie mol\u00e9culaire,\u201c rench\u00e9rit Fran\u00e7ois Houllier. \u201cR\u00e9ciproquement, l\u2019Ifremer a un socle de comp\u00e9tences en biologie et \u00e9cologie marines.
