{"id":41600,"date":"2021-08-12T12:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-08-12T10:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/news\/?p=41600"},"modified":"2024-03-22T11:25:38","modified_gmt":"2024-03-22T10:25:38","slug":"edith-heard-elected-to-the-german-national-academy-of-sciences-leopoldina","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/news\/lab-matters\/edith-heard-elected-to-the-german-national-academy-of-sciences-leopoldina\/","title":{"rendered":"Edith Heard elected to the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Following nomination by renowned members of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leopoldina.org\/\">German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina<\/a>, EMBL Director General, Professor Edith Heard FRS, was elected as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leopoldina.org\/mitgliederverzeichnis\/mitglieder\/member\/Member\/show\/edith-heard\/\">member of the academ<\/a>y in the \u2018Human Genetics and Molecular Medicine\u2019 section for her outstanding professional contributions to science.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The academy is a society of scholars who work beyond specialist areas and geographical borders to benefit scientific progress for the common good. The main objectives of the international Leopoldina community are providing scientific advice to policymakers and the public and representing the German scientific community on a variety of committees. Through these activities, members promote the sciences \u2013 primarily natural and medical sciences \u2013 both nationally and internationally. Members are elected on the basis of their excellent academic achievements and include Nobel laureates such as Albert Einstein, Max Planck and Ernest Rutherford.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is an honour to accept the election by such an established scientific academy,\u201d said Heard. She especially values the nomination, which is made by peer scientists within the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Edith Heard is the sixth EMBL scientist to be elected as a Leopoldina member while working at the organisation.
