{"id":40484,"date":"2021-07-08T13:52:04","date_gmt":"2021-07-08T11:52:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/news\/?p=40484"},"modified":"2024-03-22T11:20:04","modified_gmt":"2024-03-22T10:20:04","slug":"a-hidden-medal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/news\/alumni\/a-hidden-medal\/","title":{"rendered":"A hidden medal"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>After a big office clean-up, a medal of honour issued by the French Ministry of Labour,&nbsp; Employment, Vocational Training and Social Dialogue was unearthed after years remaining hidden in a closet. This medal was intended to reward an EMBL Grenoble alumnus, retired engineer Andr\u00e9 Gabriel, for his 35 years of service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Andr\u00e9 started working at EMBL Grenoble in 1973, where he joined the Instrumentation Team and made seminal contributions to the development of X-ray detectors. The medal recognising his service came many years after Andr\u00e9\u2019s departure from EMBL Grenoble. For reasons unknown, it ended up in a drawer, only to see the light of day again recently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Administrative staff at EMBL Grenoble were able to contact Andr\u00e9, who was very happy to learn about the discovery. Andr\u00e9, who will soon turn 85, even agreed to visit the site again \u2013 where he finally received his medal from Head of EMBL Grenoble Stephen Cusack.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We all like a story about rediscovering treasures, right?
