{"id":39674,"date":"2021-06-23T09:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-06-23T07:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/news\/?p=39674"},"modified":"2024-03-22T11:17:39","modified_gmt":"2024-03-22T10:17:39","slug":"potw2123","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/news\/picture-of-the-week\/potw2123\/","title":{"rendered":"Starlet sea anemone"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>Nematostella vectensis<\/em> \u2013 the starlet sea anemone \u2013 undergoes a transition from larva to polyp that involves a dramatic change in shape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>EMBL PhD student Anniek Stokkermans captured this side view of a <em>Nematostella vectensis<\/em> larva during this transition, using instrumentation in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.embl.de\/services\/core_facilities\/almf\/index.html\">Advanced Light Microscopy Facility<\/a> at EMBL Heidelberg. The larva has begun to elongate and four tentacle buds are emerging (two are shown in top left). The hairlike projections on its surface, called cilia, have been stained with a fluorescently labelled antibody that binds to acetylated tubulin (white), a key protein from which the cilia are made. Cell nuclei have been stained with Hoechst dye (blue).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anniek\u2019s work in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/groups\/ikmi\/\">Ikmi group<\/a> at EMBL Heidelberg focuses on linking animal behaviour and morphogenesis.
