{"id":38210,"date":"2021-04-30T10:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-04-30T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/news\/?p=38210"},"modified":"2024-04-22T15:28:38","modified_gmt":"2024-04-22T13:28:38","slug":"embl-and-tara-ocean-foundation-sail-forward-with-formalised-cooperation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/news\/lab-matters\/embl-and-tara-ocean-foundation-sail-forward-with-formalised-cooperation\/","title":{"rendered":"EMBL and Tara Ocean Foundation sail forward with formalised cooperation"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Whether it\u2019s tracking the impacts of widespread microplastics, understanding plankton ecosystems in the context of climate change, or cataloguing the ocean\u2019s microbes, EMBL and the <a href=\"https:\/\/oceans.taraexpeditions.org\/en\/\">Tara Ocean Foundation<\/a> have been collaborating with one another since the schooner <em>Tara<\/em> set out on the Tara Oceans expedition in 2008, led by EMBL alumnus Eric Karsenti as the expedition\u2019s scientific director. Credit: Massimo del Prete\/EMBL<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve already seen how many incredible discoveries this partnership has enabled, so taking it to this next level will allow us to join forces in multiple new endeavours to provide molecular insights into ocean biodiversity,\u201d says EMBL Director General Edith Heard, noting specifically Mission Microplastics in 2019, when EMBL joined the Tara Ocean Foundation to promote the science at European ports of call. \u201cWhether it\u2019s the emergence of new viruses, the spread of antibiotic resistance, or the impact of widespread microplastics in the ocean, departing from the lab to explore microbial dynamics in natural habitats adds an essential dimension to our understanding of life and the impact man has had on this planet.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Tara Ocean Foundation is a not-for-profit public interest foundation based in Paris, and organises voyages to study the impact of climate change and the ecological crisis facing the world\u2019s oceans. In addition to the research it helps facilitate with its at-sea platform, the foundation co-organises events and press conferences on board its schooner with EMBL and other relevant stakeholders and partners, raises awareness in education, and plays a growing role in ocean advocacy across numerous fields of expertise by engaging with policymakers in France and Europe, and with the United Nations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By going beyond the laboratory to study organisms in their natural habitats, EMBL can add an additional dimension to the world-class molecular biology research it is known for. This will form part of EMBL\u2019s work on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/about\/programme\/research-plans\/planetary-biology\/\">Planetary Biology<\/a> \u2013 one of the new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/about\/programme\/research-plans\/\">transversal research themes<\/a> that EMBL is developing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This MoU will expand how the two organisations can work together to study the complex interactions of microbes, plants, and animals in responding to environmental change in the ocean at molecular, cellular, organismal, and population levels,\u201d says Romain Troubl\u00e9, Executive Director of the Tara Ocean Foundation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"vf-figure  | vf-figure--align vf-figure--align-inline-end  size-medium is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Tara2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"vf-figure__image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Tara2-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-38294\" width=\"225\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Tara2-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.embl.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Tara2-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.embl.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Tara2.jpg 667w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"vf-figure__caption\">An important aspect to Mission Microplastics in 2019 was outreach at the ports of call. The new Programme will help to address some of the world\u2019s most pressing and complex issues, such as climate change and the emergence of new pandemics, by providing new and important perspectives at the molecular level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ultimately, the scientists want to understand how all the building blocks of life function in the context of their environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This MoU improves the ability of the Tara Ocean Foundation and EMBL to work together on several levels \u2013 from research endeavours and joint funding opportunities to community outreach and policy initiatives.<\/p>\n\n\n<hr class=\"vf-divider\"\/>\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"french\"><strong>La Fondation Tara Oc\u00e9an et l\u2019 EMBL formalisent leur collaboration<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cette collaboration ouvre la voie \u00e0 de futurs projets communs visant \u00e0 explorer les liens intimes entre l&#8217;Oc\u00e9an et l&#8217;Homme.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Qu&#8217;il s&#8217;agisse de suivre les effets de la diffusion des microplastiques, de comprendre les \u00e9cosyst\u00e8mes planctoniques dans le cadre du changement climatique ou de cataloguer le microbiome marin, l&#8217;EMBL et la Fondation Tara Oc\u00e9an travaillent ensemble depuis 2008 sur l\u2019exp\u00e9dition Tara Oc\u00e9ans, sous la direction scientifique d&#8217;Eric Karsenti, ex-chef de Groupe de l&#8217;EMBL. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aujourd&#8217;hui, les deux organisations formalisent cette relation gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 un protocole d&#8217;entente (MoU) qui amplifiera encore cette capacit\u00e9 mutuelle \u00e0 entreprendre des projets communs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Nous avons d\u00e9j\u00e0 prouv\u00e9 la richesse des recherches issues de notre collaboration et l\u2019amplifier permettra de documenter davantage ce que nous savons sur l\u2019Homme et notre relation \u00e0 la&nbsp; plan\u00e8te&#8221;, d\u00e9clare Edith Heard, directrice g\u00e9n\u00e9rale de l&#8217;EMBL, lors de la Mission Microplastiques en 2019, alors que l&#8217;EMBL et la Fondation co-organisaient les escales europ\u00e9ennes. &#8220;Les probl\u00e8mes complexes ne surgissent pas de nulle part. Qu&#8217;il s&#8217;agisse de l&#8217;\u00e9mergence de nouveaux virus, du d\u00e9veloppement de la r\u00e9sistance aux antibiotiques ou des impacts des microplastiques pr\u00e9sents dans l&#8217;oc\u00e9an, le fait de sortir du laboratoire pour explorer la dynamique microbienne dans les habitats naturels ajoute une dimension essentielle \u00e0 notre compr\u00e9hension de la vie et de l&#8217;impact de l&#8217;Homme sur la plan\u00e8te.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>La Fondation Tara Oc\u00e9an est la premi\u00e8re fondation fran\u00e7aise reconnue d\u2019utilit\u00e9 publique sur l\u2019Oc\u00e9an, qui depuis 17 ans organise des exp\u00e9ditions scientifiques pour \u00e9tudier l&#8217;impact du changement climatique et de la crise \u00e9cologique sur l\u2019Oc\u00e9an.&nbsp; Outre les recherches qu&#8217;elle contribue \u00e0 faciliter gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 sa go\u00e9lette <em>Tara<\/em>, la Fondation co-organise avec l&#8217;EMBL, et ses partenaires, de nombreux \u00e9v\u00e9nements de sensibilisation du grand public et tient une place importante dans l\u2019\u00e9ducation des g\u00e9n\u00e9rations futures.&nbsp; Elle joue par ailleurs un r\u00f4le croissant dans la d\u00e9fense de l\u2019Oc\u00e9an dans de nombreux domaines d&#8217;expertise aux niveaux fran\u00e7ais, europ\u00e9en et des Nations Unies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>En allant au-del\u00e0 du laboratoire pour \u00e9tudier les organismes dans leurs habitats naturels, l&#8217;EMBL apporte son expertise de classe mondiale en biologie mol\u00e9culaire et cellulaire \u00e0 la recherche internationale en \u00e9cologie, et \u00e0 l\u2019interface environnement \/ sant\u00e9 humaine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>C\u2019est l\u2019essence du d\u00e9ploiement de l&#8217;EMBL sur Planetary Biology &#8211; l&#8217;un de ses nouveaux th\u00e8mes de recherche transversaux.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Ce protocole d&#8217;accord \u00e9largira la fa\u00e7on dont nos deux organisations peuvent travailler ensemble afin d\u2019\u00e9tudier les interactions complexes des microbes, des plantes, des animaux, et de l\u2019Homme en r\u00e9ponse aux changements environnementaux de l&#8217;oc\u00e9an aux niveaux mol\u00e9culaire, cellulaire, organisationnel. Il n\u2019y a qu\u2019une seule sant\u00e9 sur cette plan\u00e8te, elle est globale. &#8221; d\u00e9clare Romain Troubl\u00e9, directeur g\u00e9n\u00e9ral de la Fondation Tara Oc\u00e9an.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Les recherches men\u00e9es en mer avec la go\u00e9lette Tara font partie d&#8217;une approche plus large que l&#8217;EMBL adoptera dans son prochain programme de recherche qui d\u00e9butera en 2022. Il contribuera \u00e0 r\u00e9soudre certains des probl\u00e8mes les plus urgents et les plus complexes actuels, tels que le changement climatique et l&#8217;\u00e9mergence de nouvelles pand\u00e9mies,
