{"id":3543,"date":"2015-03-08T10:21:58","date_gmt":"2015-03-08T09:21:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.embl.de\/?p=3543"},"modified":"2020-03-25T13:03:23","modified_gmt":"2020-03-25T12:03:23","slug":"1503-women-in-science","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/news\/lab-matters\/1503-women-in-science\/","title":{"rendered":"Supporting women in science"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The award has been introduced as part of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ebi.ac.uk\/about\/jobs\/sex-in-science\">Sex in Science<\/a> programme on the Wellcome Genome Campus, which tackles issues traditionally facing women in science, and drives policy and practice changes to redress them. Huckins received her award for inclusiveness and dedication to championing STEM careers, and <a title=\"John Overington\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ebi.ac.uk\/about\/people\/john-p-overington\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">John Overington of EMBL-EBI<\/a> received his for supporting parents by encouraging a healthy work\u2013life balance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Everyone on campus, scientific and non-scientific alike, were invited to nominate a colleague who had made a positive difference to women\u2019s careers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Huckins, a PhD student at the Sanger Institute, was recognised by a colleague because of \u201cher commitment to the Sex in Science program and Athena SWAN at Sanger, as well as to the Women&#8217;s Campaign at the University of Cambridge,\u201d and because \u201cshe seeks the involvement of the PhD students in these actions, increasing awareness of the issues in the coming generation of scientists (men and women), and encouraging us to reflect on what we can do to make a difference for ourselves and others at a pivotal point in our careers where many women choose to leave STEM fields.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"vf-blockquote\"><p>The Sex in Science programme keeps the conversation about gender balance going, making sure we remain committed to levelling the playing field in science.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Sex in Science programme keeps the conversation about gender balance going, making sure we remain committed to levelling the playing field in science,\u201d says Laura. \u201cI\u2019m proud to have been recognised as a proponent of this incredibly important issue.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>EMBL-EBI team leader John Overington was nominated because, where appropriate and possible, he \u201callows and encourages flexible working situations for all his staff, such as working from home or making up the hours at a later stage for instances where childcare falls through\u201d. His openness in communication about children and provision of flexibility means \u201chis staff feel confident to carry out their duties in instances where there are issues with childcare\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"vf-blockquote\"><p>Our working practices have to be flexible enough to allow men and women to advance their careers while keeping family their top priority.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur working practices have to be flexible enough to allow men and women to advance their careers while keeping family their top priority,\u201d says Overington. \u201cThe key is to get job roles in the team right for flexible working from the outset. I\u2019m deeply honoured to have been recognised, even though I feel we could all be doing much more.
