This phenomenon is caused by temperature inversion in the atmosphere. During an inversion, the higher layers of the atmosphere are warmer than the lower layers, preventing dust and clouds to rise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>EMBL\u2019s location in Heidelberg, halfway up the K\u00f6nigstuhl hill, puts it often right underneath or \u2060\u2013\u2060 worse \u2013 in the middle of this foggy blanket. On autumn days without Heidelberg\u2019s characteristic fog, however, the surrounding woods present themself in beautiful colours.
