{"id":3179,"date":"2015-01-26T09:45:02","date_gmt":"2015-01-26T08:45:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.embl.de\/?p=3179"},"modified":"2020-10-07T12:14:43","modified_gmt":"2020-10-07T10:14:43","slug":"1501-awards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/news\/lab-matters\/1501-awards\/","title":{"rendered":"Awards &#038; Honours"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Emmanuelle Charpentier<\/b><\/span><b> <\/b>\u2013 group leader at the Laboratory for Molecular Infection Medicine Sweden (MIMS), in the <a title=\"Nordic EMBL Partnership for Molecular Medicine\" href=\"http:\/\/www.embl.de\/research\/partnerships\/remote\/nordic\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nordic EMBL Partnership for Molecular Medicine<\/a> \u2013 shared the Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences for her discoveries on the bacterial CRISPR-Cas9, a powerful technology for editing genomes. The award recognises \u201cexcellence in research aimed at finding cures for intractable diseases and extending human life\u201d. Charpentier received $3 million, and was honoured together with Berkeley\u2019s Jennifer Doudna.<\/p>\n\n\n<hr class=\"vf-divider\"\/>\n\n\n<p class=\"p1\">This has been a rewarding year for <a title=\"Structural and Computational Biology Unit\" href=\"http:\/\/www.embl.de\/research\/units\/scb\/index.html?_ga=1.109014784.342811756.1354189945\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joint Head of Unit<\/a> <span class=\"s1\"><b>Peer Bork<\/b><\/span>. He is the fourth EMBL scientist to be elected to the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, to which he will be officially inaugurated in a ceremony in 2015. For his contribution to research development in the field of microbiology, the Japan Bifidus Foundation has honoured him with the Dr Tissier\u2019s medal. He also received an honorary professorship at the University of W\u00fcrzburg \u2013 becoming only the second individual to be so recognised by the University\u2019s Faculty of Biology.<\/p>\n\n\n<hr class=\"vf-divider\"\/>\n\n\n<p class=\"p1\"><a title=\"Matthias Hentze\" href=\"http:\/\/www.embl.de\/aboutus\/general_information\/leadership\/director\/members\/index.php?s_personId=CP-60003181\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">EMBL Director<\/a><span class=\"s1\"><b> Matthias Hentze<\/b><\/span> gave the 2014 <a title=\"Argentina: EMBL in action\" href=\"http:\/\/news.embl.de\/lab-matters\/1411_argentina\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cesar Milstein Lecture<\/a> \u2013 named after the Argentinian 1984 Nobel Laureate \u2013 in October, at the Leloir Institute in Buenos Aires. The following month, at Uppsala University in Sweden, he gave the third annual Lennart Philipson Memorial Lecture, honouring EMBL\u2019s second Director General.
