Launched in 1983, it forms part of our efforts to train and inspire talented scientists to become skilled and creative future leaders, and has become a role model for graduate education in the molecular life sciences. The EIPP provides an ideal training environment for its students to develop into experienced and independent scientists. It balances theoretical and practical training and includes an interdisciplinary training curriculum, covering a wide range of tools, techniques and applications. Under close mentorship from EMBL scientists, the students are encouraged to use their own creativity and collaborative teamwork to develop scientific independence.

“The spirit of collaboration and absence of barriers at EMBL means that there are almost no limits to the ideas you can pursue,” says Sara Formichetti, Predoctoral Fellow in the Boulard group at EMBL Rome. The breadth of research topics and state-of-the-art technologies available at EMBL’s six sites offer plenty of opportunities for collaborative research. “You can find support from experts in an incredible variety of techniques,” adds Formichetti.

Scientific interaction and exchange are further encouraged through retreats and the annual EMBL PhD Symposium. All of these activities are embedded into EMBL’s welcoming and supportive multi-national culture, which includes 220 predocs from 50 countries. “At EMBL, you meet group leaders and students from all over the world – it’s a huge international experience, which is very eye-opening in terms of all the different perspectives and ideas you get,” says Rachel Edgar, Predoctoral Fellow in the Zerbino group at EMBL-EBI Hinxton.

Each year, 50-60 new students are admitted into the EIPP via two highly competitive international calls.
