{"id":3067,"date":"2015-01-26T10:09:11","date_gmt":"2015-01-26T09:09:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.embl.de\/?p=3067"},"modified":"2024-11-14T16:26:31","modified_gmt":"2024-11-14T15:26:31","slug":"1501_vizbiplus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/news\/alumni\/1501_vizbiplus\/","title":{"rendered":"Lights, camera, action"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"p1 wp-block-heading\">By Theodoros Soldatos<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p1\">The films <i>The Hungry Microbiome<\/i> and <i>Cancer is Not One Disease<\/i> were produced through the <a title=\"VizbiPlus\" href=\"http:\/\/www.vizbi.org\/Plus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">VizbiPlus project<\/a>, which aims to present inspiring, informative and scientifically-sound animations about recent developments in the life sciences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"vf-video\" style=\"padding-top: 0; padding-bottom: 56.25%;\">\n    <iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/youtube.com\/embed\/BlajAw8exg4\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; encrypted-media\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cWhile this effort is primarily geared to help improve how science is communicated, a distinctive feature is that it is not designed only to inform, but also to educate and engage the public,\u201d explains O\u2019Donoghue, who is group leader at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research in Sydney and the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation. \u201cIt is a unique combination of science and art \u2013 scientists producing the videos spend the best part of a year to deliver two to three minutes of footage, but most of this time is spent doing science, talking to other researchers, or reading papers. We want to make sure every frame is consistent with what we know is true in science.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"vf-blockquote\"><p class=\"p1\">We want to make sure every frame is consistent with [the]&nbsp;science.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p1\">The videos, available on YouTube, have been viewed thousands of times by people around the world, and showcased at sold-out events and festivals. \u201cYou get insight into what is going on at a scale that is otherwise inaccessible,\u201d O\u2019Donoghue explains. \u201cTake our gut microbiome \u2013 we know that many plant foods benefit our health, and through animation we have illuminated in intricate detail the role that the bacteria in our intestines have in this process. It is inspiring to watch and people are captivated by a world they may know little about.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"vf-video\" style=\"padding-top: 0; padding-bottom: 56.25%;\">\n    <iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/youtube.com\/embed\/NI3KtR3LoqM\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; encrypted-media\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p1\">Animators in O\u2019Donoghue\u2019s groups use tools developed by other team members, such as Aquaria \u2013 a new protein structure service that provides a concise visual summary of all related Protein Data Bank structures, simplifying the process of gaining insight into molecular function. Amongst a raft of award-winning projects, his multidisciplinary teams also work on community initiatives such as the Visualising Biological Data (Vizbi) conference series, which aims to raise the global standard of data visualisation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cResearchers are gathering data at unprecedented rates,\u201d adds O\u2019Donoghue, who has used data visualisation techniques throughout a career spanning both academia and industry. \u201cHumans are driven by vision \u2013 we are very effective at looking at complex information and extracting patterns.
