{"id":2976,"date":"2014-12-19T15:15:31","date_gmt":"2014-12-19T14:15:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.embl.de\/?p=2976"},"modified":"2024-11-14T16:26:49","modified_gmt":"2024-11-14T15:26:49","slug":"1412_greece","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/news\/alumni\/1412_greece\/","title":{"rendered":"EMBL, its alumni and Greece"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The HSBMB board \u2013 including alumni Dimitris Kletsas and George Simos \u2013 agreed to dedicate a session to EMBL on day two of the programme, following the suggestion of the alumni network in Greece, and in particular EMBL Alumni Association board member Anastasia Politou, now Associate Professor at Ioannina Medical School, and Simos, now Professor at the University of Thessaly School of Medicine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The session, entitled \u2018EMBL, its alumni and Greece: Resources and Opportunities\u2019, showcased the scientific impact of EMBL alumni on life science in Greece, be it introducing new research directions, establishing state-of-the-art facilities, training, generating funding, publishing, or engaging in societies and events. It also focused on the resources and opportunities available at the Laboratory, with talks by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/services-facilities\/core-facilities\/\">Head of EMBL Core Facilities Rainer Pepperkok<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.embl.org\/groups\/typas\/\">group leader Nassos Typas<\/a>. A concluding panel discussion looked at EMBL and EMBO\u2019s roles and contributions to molecular biology in Greece, with candid examples presented by the alumni panel members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"vf-blockquote\"><p>Such meetings, that bridge the gap between EMBL\u2019s past and the present, will only help both sides.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>More than 300&nbsp;conference participants, mostly young students, attended the session and contributed to a lively discussion. A hot topic was how young scientists could harness training opportunities and facilities at EMBL through internships \u2013 this is a high priority for the alumni network in Greece, and one which Politou looks forward to investigating further.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis was a really valuable community effort \u2013 I hope EMBL alumni continue to organise similar events regularly in the future,\u201d says Rainer Pepperkok. \u201cThere was a great mix of alumni from throughout EMBL\u2019s 40 years, all sharing fond memories as well as excitement about science and the future,\u201d adds Nassos Typas.&nbsp;\u201cSuch meetings, that bridge the gap between EMBL\u2019s past and the present, will only help both sides.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis was the perfect context to present and discuss a bird\u2019s-eye-view of EMBL\u2019s impact on the development of life sciences in Greece, and to promote personal connections with Greece\u2019s scientific community, especially young scientists,\u201d concludes Politou. \u201cThe lively interactions and enthusiastic feedback affirm our intentions to organise similar events in the
