The rest, as they say, is history, and in his pre-dinner speech, Holmes gave guests a unique personal account of the journey he and his colleagues ventured on in those early days \u2013 a talk peppered with hilarious anecdotes remembered by his then student Gerd Rosenbaum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image wp-image-2903 size-full\"><figure class=\"vf-figure  | vf-figure--align vf-figure--align-centered \"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"620\" height=\"380\" class=\"vf-figure__image\" src=\"http:\/\/news.embl.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Hamburg_40-5.jpg\" alt=\"Ken Holmes gives a pre-dinner speech to gathered colleagues, alumni and friends. Michael Rossmann from Purdue University, who gave the keynote lecture, recalled tales of scientific research spanning some six decades \u2013 beginning in Cambridge working under Nobel Prize winner Max Perutz and ending with his current pioneering studies on viruses. \u201cWe used to spend weeks punching buttons on a calculator to establish electron density maps,\u201d he recalled, describing key moments that have lit the path of his research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image size-full wp-image-2899\"><figure class=\"vf-figure  | vf-figure--align vf-figure--align-centered \"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"620\" height=\"380\" class=\"vf-figure__image\" src=\"http:\/\/news.embl.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Hamburg_40-1.jpg\" alt=\"Michael Rossmann presents the keynote lecture. PHOTO: EMBL Photolab\/Hugo Neves<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Instances that have defined EMBL Hamburg\u2019s own history \u2013 from the development of small angle X-ray scattering, to the opening of PETRA III \u2013 provided rich discussion topics. \u201cEMBL Hamburg began life in a small bunker, but we soon outgrew it \u2013 now look at us,\u201d said Heinrich Stuhrmann, former head of outstation. \u201cWe have seen a fantastic evolution of data collection capacity,\u201d said Keith Wilson, also a former head of the outstation. Meanwhile, alumnus Jules Hendrix gave a first hand account of the development of the first imaging detector, which has changed the way crystallography is done: \u201cWe convinced ourselves we could do 25 times better than using film \u2013 and we did!\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image size-full wp-image-2900\"><figure class=\"vf-figure  | vf-figure--align vf-figure--align-centered \"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"620\" height=\"380\" class=\"vf-figure__image\" src=\"http:\/\/news.embl.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Hamburg_40-2.jpg\" alt=\"Keith Wilson, former head of EMBL Hamburg.
