Now I feel like I have the confidence to go ahead without being anxious that I will mess it up!\u201d explains Sofia Sal\u00f6, from Roskilde University, Denmark, an enthusiastic participant of a new EMBL Practical Course on Next Generation Sequencing (NGS), held in partnership with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.illumina.com\/http:\/\/www.illumina.com\/\">Illumina<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This first training course organised by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.embl.de\/training\/eicat\/index.html\">EMBL International Centre for Advanced Training<\/a> (EICAT) with Illumina, a member of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.embl.de\/aboutus\/resource_dev\/cpp\/index.html\">EMBL\u2019s Corporate Partnership Programme<\/a>, was a success on many levels. Most importantly, it met the participants\u2019 scientific expectations. Illumina is currently the most advanced provider of NGS technology: its high precision, reproducibility, and wide range of application makes it an indispensable tool for many researchers who then need efficient, hands-on, training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The series of four courses took place between 6 October and 7 November 2014, and focused&nbsp;on four topics: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.embl.de\/training\/events\/2014\/ILL14-01\/index.html\">whole genome sequencing\/library preparation and validation<\/a>;&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.embl.de\/training\/events\/2014\/ILL14-02\/index.html\">total RNA sequencing\/library preparation and validation<\/a>, and&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.embl.de\/training\/events\/2014\/ILL14-03\/index.html\">amplicon-based<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.embl.de\/training\/events\/2014\/ILL14-04\/index.html\">enrichment-based<\/a> translational and clinical targeted resequencing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"vf-figure wp-block-image alignnone wp-image-2562 size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"620\" height=\"380\" class=\"vf-figure__image\" src=\"http:\/\/news.embl.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/1411_illumina3.jpg\" alt=\"Participants in an EMBL-Illumina training course. Such high attendance for a first session is a good indicator that the upcoming courses \u2013 12 dates are already booked in 2015 \u2013 will attract even more participants to EMBL.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis kind of collaboration is extremely positive for both parties: EMBL is proud to offer training in the most advanced technology with the expert provider. At the same time, Illumina benefits from EMBL\u2019s reputation of excellence in defining and developing the forefront of molecular biology,\u201d explains J\u00fcrgen Deka, Scientific Coordinator of EICAT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"vf-blockquote\"><p>We really worked together to determine the best workflow<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The scientific content of the courses was developed by Illumina, in partnership with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.embl.de\/services\/core_facilities\/genecore\/members\/index.php?s_personId=CP-60003318\">Vladimir Benes <\/a>and his team at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.embl.de\/services\/core_facilities\/genecore\/index.html\">Genomics Core Facility<\/a>. \u201cWe really worked together to determine the best workflow for the part of the course that is more focused on basic research; but the more clinically-oriented part was managed by Illumina,\u201d explains Vladimir Benes, from EMBL. \u201cWe have a lot of theoretical and basic knowledge of how the product works, but it is very valuable to add the experience and best-practices from the Genomics Core Facility\u201d adds Daniel Heisswolf, Marketing Clinical Specialist Central Europe, from Illumina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"vf-figure wp-block-image alignnone wp-image-2557 size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"620\" height=\"380\" class=\"vf-figure__image\" src=\"http:\/\/news.embl.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/1411_illumina.jpg\" alt=\"Group photo of the first EMBL-Illumina training course.
