It enables scientists to observe living cells in three dimensions, for extended periods of time. Now&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/luxendo.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Luxendo<\/a>, a start-up company launched by the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) and its technology transfer arm&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.embl-em.de\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">EMBLEM Technology Transfer&nbsp;<\/a>(EMBLEM) in Heidelberg, Germany, and funded by the EMBL Technology Fund II (ETF II), in Heidelberg and&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lspvc.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Life Science Partners (LSP)<\/a>, in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, will bring these cutting-edge microscopes to users across the globe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLight-sheet microscopy has already allowed us to see things we couldn\u2019t dream of before, such as imaging the entire embryonic development of the fruit fly with subcellular resolution,\u201d says&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.embl.de\/research\/units\/cbb\/hufnagel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lars Hufnagel<\/a>, who develops the technology at EMBL and uses it in his research on tissue development. \u201cIn a company setting the technology can be pushed even further, and made available to many more people than we could have catered to as research groups\u201d says&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.embl.de\/research\/units\/cbb\/ellenberg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jan Ellenberg<\/a>, who teamed up with Lars to develop light sheet technology for studying early mammalian development.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Luxendo will initially be hosted on the EMBL campus, and will focus exclusively on developing and commercializing light-sheet microscopy for biomedical research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBeing incubated at EMBL is a win-win situation,\u201d says Luxendo CEO Christoph Antz. \u201cIt means scientists have access to these new technologies as we develop them, and at the same time we can test and improve the microscopes with our intended users right from the onset.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although based in Europe, Luxendo aims to serve the research community worldwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEMBL\u2019s strong patent portfolio in the field of light-sheet microscopy has been built up over many years and puts Luxendo on a solid footing for competitive development in this field\u201c says G\u00e1bor Lamm, Managing Director for EMBLEM.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The company\u2019s MuVi-SPIM microscopes \u2013 initially developed by Hufnagel at EMBL \u2013 are already available on the market, with other devices to follow soon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>About Luxendo:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Luxendo is the most recent spin-off company from EMBL.
