{"id":229,"date":"2014-07-01T00:00:23","date_gmt":"2014-06-30T22:00:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.embl.de\/?p=229"},"modified":"2024-11-14T16:33:01","modified_gmt":"2024-11-14T15:33:01","slug":"1407_pdbe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/news\/science\/1407_pdbe\/","title":{"rendered":"The shape of things to come"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ebi.ac.uk\/pdbe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Protein Data Bank in Europe (PDBe)<\/a>, run by EMBL-EBI, is in the process of launching a new website and data-handling innovations to enhance the amount of information researchers can glean from protein structure data. A timely step, as the number of protein structures in the database reached 100,000 in May this year (Another structural biology milestone was reached in Grenoble just months earlier, with the <a title=\"The future\u2019s bright\" href=\"http:\/\/news.embl.de\/science\/1406_structures\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">10 000th biological structure<\/a> determined at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility, ESRF).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One innovation is the rollout of a common data deposition system that allows researchers to upload information about very large proteins in one go, using a file format called mmCIF. Previous systems could only handle smaller datasets, meaning that information about large, complex proteins was fractured into several sections.
