{"id":22757,"date":"2020-04-20T16:12:38","date_gmt":"2020-04-20T14:12:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/news\/?p=22757"},"modified":"2025-07-15T12:43:37","modified_gmt":"2025-07-15T10:43:37","slug":"embl-ebi-launches-covid-19-data-portal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/news\/science\/embl-ebi-launches-covid-19-data-portal\/","title":{"rendered":"EMBL-EBI launches COVID-19 Data Portal"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>EMBL\u2019s European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) and partners today launched the <a href=\"http:\/\/covid19dataportal.org\">COVID<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/covid19dataportal.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&#8211;<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/covid19dataportal.org\">19 Data Portal<\/a>, which enables the sharing and analysis of data related to the new coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2. The initiative aims to facilitate international collaboration to accelerate scientific discovery, monitor the pandemic and help develop treatments and a vaccine for the new coronavirus.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">An international effort<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, thousands of researchers across the globe have been working tirelessly to study the new coronavirus. They have generated an enormous amount of information, but until now there has been no central repository for this information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The COVID-19 Data Portal addresses this need, creating a shared space where data about the new coronavirus can be stored, shared and analysed using tools developed by EMBL-EBI and the wider scientific community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNo single institute or country can tackle this pandemic,\u201d explains Rolf Apweiler, Director of EMBL-EBI. \u201c We have to work together and share data in an open, sustainable and smart way. IMAGE: Spencer Phillps<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A multitude of data types<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Currently, the COVID-19 Data Portal includes datasets from the following EMBL-EBI data resources:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ebi.ac.uk\/ena\">European Nucleotide <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ebi.ac.uk\/ena\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Archive<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ebi.ac.uk\/ena\"> (ENA)<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uniprot.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UniProt<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ebi.ac.uk\/pdbe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Protein<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ebi.ac.uk\/pdbe\/\"> Data Bank in Europe (PDBe)<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ebi.ac.uk\/pdbe\/emdb\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Electron Microscopy Data Bank (EMDB)<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ebi.ac.uk\/gxa\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Expression<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ebi.ac.uk\/gxa\/home\"> Atlas<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/europepmc.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Europe PMC<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These resources cover a wide range of data types including genomic, protein and microscopy data, as well as scientific literature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the coming weeks, the portal will also include genomic data from the outbreak and a dedicated Cohort Browser for searching clinical and epidemiological data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cUsers can upload their SARS-CoV-2 data and get access to data from other sources around the world,\u201d says Guy Cochrane, Team Leader for Data Coordination and Archiving at EMBL-EBI. \u201cWe\u2019re working hard to make the portal intuitive and easy to use. The portal also features data analysis and visualisation tools to help interpret the data.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"vf-figure  | vf-figure--align vf-figure--align-centered  size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"742\" class=\"vf-figure__image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/data-types-chart-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-22905\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/data-types-chart-1.png 700w, https:\/\/www.embl.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/data-types-chart-1-283x300.png 283w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><figcaption class=\"vf-figure__caption\">The COVID-19 Data Portal will evolve to contain a wide selection of data types, including the ones in the table above.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ramping up efforts<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In the coming weeks and months, additional datasets and tools from other European projects will be added to the COVID-19 Data Portal. With the help of ELIXIR, the intergovernmental organisation that brings together life science data and resources from across Europe, and with the help of other collaborators, the COVID-19 Data Portal will continue to grow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Science, public health and healthcare have to work together if we want to minimise the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic,\u201d says Marion Koopmans, Head of the Viroscience Department of Erasmus Medical Centre in Rotterdam, and a collaborator in the COVID-19 Data Portal project. \u201cWe are hoping that this initiative will enable researchers, clinicians and public health workers to safely and efficiently share their data in order to come up with answers to the most pressing questions about COVID-19.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Part of a wider European response<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The COVID-19 Data Portal is the entry point to the wider <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ebi.ac.uk\/about\/news\/announcements\/embl-ebi-leads-international-collaboration-share-covid-19-research-data\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">European COVID-19 Data <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/news\/science\/embl-ebi-leads-international-collaboration-to-share-covid-19-research-data\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Platform<\/a> initiative, which involves the creation of multiple SARS-CoV-2 Data Hubs. These hubs are currently being built and, once ready, will organise the flow of sequence data from the outbreak and provide comprehensive open data sharing for the European and global research communities accessible through the Data Portal.<\/p>\n\n\n<blockquote\n\n\nclass=\"vf-blockquote\"><p>\u201cLaunching the European COVID-19 Data Platform is an important concrete measure for stronger cooperation in fighting the coronavirus,\u201d says European Commissioner Mariya Gabriel. \u201cBuilding on our dedicated support for open science and open access over the years, now is the time to step up our efforts and stand united with our researchers. Through our joint efforts, we will better understand, diagnose and eventually overpower the pandemic.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Both the European COVID-19 Data Portal and the SARS-CoV-2 Data Hubs will use already established EMBL-EBI data infrastructures, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ebi.ac.uk\/ena\/pathogens\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pathogen<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ebi.ac.uk\/ena\/pathogens\/home\"> Portal<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ebi.ac.uk\/ena\">European <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ebi.ac.uk\/ena\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nucleotide<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ebi.ac.uk\/ena\"> Archive (ENA)<\/a>. IMAGE: Spencer Phillips<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The European COVID-19 Data Platform is one of the ten projects included in the first iteration of the <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/info\/sites\/info\/files\/research_and_innovation\/research_by_area\/documents\/ec_rtd_era-vs-corona_0.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ERAvsCORONA Action Plan<\/a> launched by the European Commission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe need Open Science now more than ever before,\u201d says Kostas Glinos, Head of the Open Science Unit of the European Commission. \u201cSharing data and knowledge at such an unprecedented speed will help us win the battle against the pandemic. We are very happy to work with EMBL-EBI and the other partners in this common effort.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The European COVID-19 Data Platform is a partnership between EMBL-EBI, <a href=\"https:\/\/elixir-europe.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ELIXIR<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/info\/index_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">European Commission<\/a>.
