{"id":22255,"date":"2020-04-02T14:54:10","date_gmt":"2020-04-02T12:54:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/news\/?p=22255"},"modified":"2025-06-02T13:14:02","modified_gmt":"2025-06-02T11:14:02","slug":"embl-twinning-grants-2020","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/news\/lab-matters\/embl-twinning-grants-2020\/","title":{"rendered":"EMBL shares expertise with four European institutes"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Three international teams involving various research groups and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.embl.de\/services\/core_facilities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">core facilities at EMBL Heidelberg<\/a> have been granted funding from the European Commission (EC) for three <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/programmes\/horizon2020\/en\/h2020-section\/twinning\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Twinning projects<\/a> with institutes in Portugal and the Czech Republic. The projects will enable the creation of new research networks and collaborations across Europe. They are funded with \u20ac1 million each and will run for three years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Enabling development<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Twinning is part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/programmes\/horizon2020\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">EC\u2019s \u2018Horizon 2020\u2019 widening programme<\/a>. It aims to foster knowledge transfer from leading European universities and research institutes to their partner institutions in Central and Eastern Europe, Luxembourg, and Portugal. At least two advanced partners, like EMBL, team up with an institute in these countries to share their expertise through workshops, staff exchanges, or summer schools. Twinning projects thus foster the exchange of knowledge between participants and enable new areas of expertise to be developed and sustained at research institutes based in regions that are less established in research and innovation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>EMBL has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/news\/science\/1506-ceitec-twins\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">previously been involved<\/a> in two Twinning projects and one <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/programmes\/horizon2020\/en\/h2020-section\/teaming\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Teaming project<\/a> \u2013 a more extensive collaboration for establishing the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/news\/lab-matters\/hcemm-embl-partnership\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Hungarian Centre of Excellence for Molecular Medicine<\/a>. The participation in three new Twinning projects underscores EMBL\u2019s continued efforts to promote collaborative research across Europe and bring together the European life science community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">OLISSIPO: Strengthening computational biology<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inesc-id.pt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Instituto de Engenharia de Sistemas e Computadores, Investiga\u00e7\u00e3o e Desenvolvimento (INESC-ID)<\/a> in Lisbon, Portugal, is a non-profit research institution with expertise in artificial intelligence, information and decision support systems, graphics and interaction, distributed systems, communication networks, high-performance computing, nanoelectronics and power systems. The OLISSIPO project aims to bring these disciplines together with biological and biomedical research and strengthen INESC-ID\u2019s research profile in computational biology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>OLISSIPO is a joint effort by EMBL\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.embl.de\/research\/units\/genome_biology\/huber\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Huber group<\/a>, partners at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inria.fr\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">French National Institute for Research in Digital Science and Technology (INRIA)<\/a> in Lyon, the <a href=\"https:\/\/ethz.ch\/en.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH Zurich)<\/a>, and INESC-ID. The project will focus on key applications of statistics in molecular biology research, for example in single cell analyses and simulations, and the mathematical modelling of cell\u2013cell interactions. Group leader Wolfgang Huber and his team will contribute their expertise in developing statistical methods and computational tools, and will prepare tutorials, training courses, and outreach activities, and welcome scientists from INESC-ID to EMBL Heidelberg. The ultimate goal of OLISSIPO is to establish a leading European cluster of excellence in computational biology in Lisbon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">SymbNET: Boosting host\u2013microbiome symbiosis research<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.igc.gulbenkian.pt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Instituto Gulbenkian de Ci\u00eancia (IGC)<\/a> is a biological and biomedical research institute near Lisbon. Several groups at IGC study microbial communities \u2013 a field in which large-scale genomic and metabolomic analyses are needed to establish causal relations and unravel molecular mechanisms. To strengthen their expertise in this area, IGC and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itqb.unl.pt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Instituto de Tecnologia Qu\u00edmica e Biol\u00f3gica \u2013 Universidade Nova de Lisboa (ITQB NOVA)<\/a> will collaborate with EMBL, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uni-kiel.de\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Kiel University<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unil.ch\/central\/en\/home.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">University of Lausanne<\/a> in the SymbNET project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SymbNET will enable researchers at IGC and ITQB NOVA to expand their research and training capacities in microbiota research and will promote the formation of a European network of excellence in this field. EMBL\u2019s contribution will be coordinated by group leader Kiran Patil and will involve expertise from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.embl.de\/research\/units\/scb\/patil\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Patil<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.embl.de\/research\/units\/genome_biology\/typas\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Typas<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.embl.de\/research\/units\/scb\/barabas\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Barabas<\/a> groups, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.embl.de\/research\/units\/scb\/alexandrov\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Alexandrov team<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.embl.de\/services\/core_facilities\/metabolomics\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Metabolomics<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.embl.de\/services\/core_facilities\/genecore\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Genomics<\/a> Core Facilities. The unique interdisciplinary research portfolio at EMBL will help researchers from IGC and ITQB NOVA to apply advanced genomics and metabolomics technologies. Involvement in SymbNET further strengthens EMBL\u2019s research and training portfolio in studying organism\u2013environment interactions at the molecular level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">INTEG-RNA: Integrating multidisciplinary RNA research <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Research in the field of ribonucleic acid (RNA) biology is becoming increasingly interdisciplinary, involving bioinformaticians, structural biologists, imaging specialists, and biophysicists. To strengthen the RNA research community at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ceitec.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Central European Institute of Technology (CEITEC)<\/a> at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.muni.cz\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Masaryk University<\/a> in Brno, Czech Republic, and integrate various disciplines, CEITEC researchers will collaborate with experts at EMBL, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imb.de\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Institute of Molecular Biology (IMB) Mainz<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uni-mainz.de\/eng\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ed.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">University of Edinburgh<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The INTEG-RNA project aims to establish a cluster of excellence in RNA research in Brno. EMBL\u2019s role in the project is coordinated by Vladimir Benes, Head of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.embl.de\/services\/core_facilities\/genecore\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Genomics Core Facility<\/a>, and involves the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.embl.de\/research\/units\/directors_research\/heard\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">group of Director General Edith Heard<\/a>. EMBL scientists will contribute their expertise in functional genomics analyses and in the technology and data analysis tools used in RNA sequencing and single-cell analyses. In particular, the Genomics Core Facility will conduct scientific courses and training on bioinformatic approaches in RNA research. EMBL\u2019s contribution will help CEITEC to integrate their research groups, methodological approaches, and training of young scientists in RNA biology, and allow their researchers to establish
