{"id":1859,"date":"2014-09-16T10:57:52","date_gmt":"2014-09-16T08:57:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.embl.de\/?p=1859"},"modified":"2025-02-19T13:37:07","modified_gmt":"2025-02-19T12:37:07","slug":"1409_hamburg-anniversary-symposium","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/news\/events\/1409_hamburg-anniversary-symposium\/","title":{"rendered":"Hamburg anniversary symposium: Preview"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Symposium keynote speaker Michael Rossmann\u2019s career as a crystallographer spans almost 70 years and encompasses some key developments in the field, including being the first to map the structure of the common cold&nbsp;virus to an atomic level, and identifying a frequently occurring motif in protein structures, now known as the &#8216;Rossmann fold&#8217;. In a preview interview, he looks back at the early days of synchrotron radiation and crystallography, and makes some predications about the future of structural biology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">EMBL Hamburg is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year \u2013 what was your first contact with Hamburg?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In the very early days of synchrotron radiation, around 1981 or 1982, I went to DESY to collect data. It was not a very fruitful visit. I was there for about three weeks waiting for beam time \u2013 in those days of &#8216;parasitic use&#8217; of the synchrotron, physicists were busy breaking atoms and we couldn\u2019t get access. In desperation, I went to England to collect data at the Daresbury Laboratory. Since then, my group has been to DESY on a few other occasions to collect data on RNA viruses, which was more successful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Synchrotron radiation has been key to your research. What other research institutes have been important during your career?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Soon after my first visit to DESY we started working at the Cornell High Energy Synchrotron source (CHESS) at Cornell University, and did a lot of good work there for many years. In 1995 the Advanced Photon Source in Chicago opened up close by, and since then we have done a lot of our research there. I have also visited other synchrotrons over the years, and visited Hamburg in 2013 where I enjoyed giving a talk at the new X-ray Free Electron Laser (XFEL) \u2013 as you know, there is now a strong focus on laser data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"vf-figure  | vf-figure--align vf-figure--align-inline-start  \"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"vf-figure__image\" src=\"http:\/\/news.embl.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/1409_HH-preview_rossmann.jpg\" alt=\"Michael Rossmann\" class=\"wp-image-1869\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"vf-blockquote\"><p>I think the future of structural biology is with electron microscopy \u2013 although not to the exclusion of crystallography.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What do you think the future holds in store for the field of structural biology?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Most of the work that I and others have done has been in crystallography, but over the past three or four years, electron microscopy has become very dominant. I think the future of structural biology is with electron microscopy \u2013 although not to the exclusion of crystallography. I think electron microscopy will become far more important. I have been very much involved in combining crystallography with electron microscopy, as well as other techniques such as small angle X-ray scattering \u2013 there is certainly a move in this direction throughout the field of structural biology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can you share a sneak preview of what you\u2019ll discuss in your talk in November?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I will talk about my early experience in Cambridge, when I was working with Max Perutz at the MRC Laboratory for Molecular Biology on the first structure determination of proteins, namely haemoglobin.
