The Awards, presented annually to five exceptional women scientists from different regions of the world, are this year honouring the achievements of women in the life sciences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Heard receives the award for her fundamental discoveries concerning the <a href=\"http:\/\/news.embl.de\/science\/scientists-explore-how-females-shut-off-their-second-x-chromosome\">mechanisms governing epigenetic processes<\/a>, which allow mammals to regulate proper gene expression and are essential for life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The awards will be made at a ceremony on 12 March at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, where <a href=\"https:\/\/en.unesco.org\/news\/22nd-loreal-unesco-women-science-awards-recognizes-five-exceptional-women-researchers-life\">this year\u2019s five laureates<\/a> will be recognised alongside 15 Rising Talents\u00a0\u2013 young women scientists from around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since its creation in 1998, the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.unesco.org\/science-sustainable-future\/women-in-science\">L\u2019Or\u00e9al\u2013UNESCO For Women in Science Programme<\/a> has honoured and supported five outstanding women researchers each year. It has also supported more than 3,300 talented young women scientists in more than 118 countries. At EMBL, a current recipient of a stipend from the Programme is Andrea Imle, postdoctoral fellow in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.embl.de\/research\/units\/cbb\/diz-munoz\">Diz-Mu\u00f1oz group<\/a>. In 2019, Sissy Kalayil, postdoctoral fellow in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.embl.fr\/research\/unit\/cusack\">Cusack group<\/a>, received <span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-1qd0xha r-ad9z0x r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">the Young Talent France 2019 L&#8217;Or\u00e9al\u2013UNESCO Prize for Women in Science<\/span>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>EMBL Director General recognised
