{"id":18006,"date":"2019-12-24T09:00:32","date_gmt":"2019-12-24T08:00:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.embl.de\/?p=18006"},"modified":"2024-03-22T13:39:25","modified_gmt":"2024-03-22T12:39:25","slug":"potw1952","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/news\/picture-of-the-week\/potw1952\/","title":{"rendered":"Launching proteins"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What looks like a photo-series of an explosive eruption are actually uptaking proteins, captured by Markus Mund from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.embl.de\/research\/units\/cbb\/ries\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ries Group<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at EMBL Heidelberg.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The images were made in an attempt to learn how the different proteins that take up molecules into the cells via endocytosis <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the cellular process in which substances are brought into a cell <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are arranged on the nanoscale when they are recruited to the plasma membrane, where they perform this uptake.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Super-resolution microscopy was used to capture these stunning images. In total, endocytic proteins were imaged at more than 100,000 sites of endocytosis in yeast! The images showed that these proteins are organised in \u2018nano-rings\u2019 around each other. These rings form a template for the recruitment of the protein actin.
