Yet despite it being the organ that makes us conscious beings \u2013 and despite the fact that researchers have been studying it for generations \u2013 it\u2019s still a constant source of surprise.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To help lift the veil on some of its mystery, Lina Streich \u2013 a predoc in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.embl.de\/research\/units\/cbb\/prevedel\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prevedel group<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at EMBL Heidelberg \u2013 is studying brain development in embryonic mice. Mice and humans have very similar brain architectures, made up of similar types of brain cells, so knowledge gained from mice can often aid our understanding of the human brain.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The image was acquired with a newly developed three-photon microscope, built at EMBL by Lina Streich and the Prevedel group. It shows cortical pyramidal V neurons.
