Reading the DNA of an infecting&nbsp;<em>M. tuberculosis<\/em>&nbsp;strain provides a digital fingerprint. This could inform a clinician which drugs will or will not work. If shared appropriately,&nbsp;the information can also advise&nbsp;health services about the spread of drug resistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Global TB monitoring<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ukri.org\/\" data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/www.ukri.org\/\">UK Research and Innovation (UKRI)<\/a> announced it is awarding funding to 18 projects that hope to identify innovative research solutions to help the world\u2019s most vulnerable people. One of the projects chosen, entitled ARGENT, aims to pilot a global TB monitoring service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ARGENT project is a collaboration between the Supranational TB Laboratory for South America, based in Buenos Aires at INEI-ANLIS \u201cMalbran\u201d, and EMBL\u2019s European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI). What is the aim of the project? Implement a tuberculosis DNA analysis workflow. In parallel, the researchers will trial a global TB monitoring service that automatically compares new samples to a global database.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A pilot study<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cGenetics has the potential to change the way we diagnose and treat tuberculosis,\u201d explains <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ebi.ac.uk\/about\/people\/zamin-iqbal\" data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/www.ebi.ac.uk\/about\/people\/zamin-iqbal\">Zamin Iqbal<\/a>, Research Group Leader at EMBL-EBI. \u201cWe hope that this collaboration will enable us to develop a tool that helps clinicians and researchers in the field to track and treat this deadly disease.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 18-month project has been funded as part of UKRI\u2019s Global Challenges Research Fund Innovation and Commercialisation programme.
