{"id":17157,"date":"2019-08-29T09:02:20","date_gmt":"2019-08-29T07:02:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.embl.de\/?p=17157"},"modified":"2024-03-22T12:06:53","modified_gmt":"2024-03-22T11:06:53","slug":"embl-lautenschlager-summer-school-success","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/news\/events\/embl-lautenschlager-summer-school-success\/","title":{"rendered":"EMBL Lautenschl\u00e4ger Summer School success"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.embl.de\/training\/undergraduates\/summer_school\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">EMBL Lautenschl\u00e4ger Summer School<\/a> was established to inspire students from fields such as physics, maths, engineering and computer science to pursue interdisciplinary research in the life sciences. The inaugural programme ran from 15\u201326 July at EMBL Heidelberg, with 20 students from 18 countries, including 13 EMBL member states. The Summer School is made possible thanks to a substantial gift from the Manfred Lautenschl\u00e4ger-Stiftung and further generous donations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The two-week programme \u2013 on the theme <em>Visualising Life&nbsp;<\/em>\u2013 offered the students a unique opportunity to experience first-hand the interdisciplinary nature of EMBL\u2019s research environment. In the practical sessions they built compound microscopes to image the development of the sea anemone <em>Nematostella vectensis<\/em>, and wrote code to extract information from a large dataset of images. The workshops were complemented by lectures and talks by EMBL group leaders, postdocs and PhD students. In line with the underlying principle of \u2018Talents teach talents\u2019, PhD students were actively involved in all aspects of the programme, gaining valuable teaching experience throughout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image size-full wp-image-17161\"><figure class=\"vf-figure  | vf-figure--align vf-figure--align-centered \"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"620\" height=\"413\" class=\"vf-figure__image\" src=\"https:\/\/news.embl.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Lab.jpg\" alt=\"Students in the lab\" class=\"wp-image-17161\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Lab.jpg 620w, https:\/\/www.embl.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Lab-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.embl.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Lab-293x195.jpg 293w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><figcaption class=\"vf-figure__caption\">Students get hands-on experience in the lab. PHOTO: Marietta Schupp\/EMBL<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Exciting curiosity about biology<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe goal was to get students from other disciplines excited to work in biology, and especially at EMBL,\u201d explains group leader Robert Prevedel, one of the summer school\u2019s organisers. \u201cWe wanted to show how interdisciplinary the research is, and that as a physicist, or mathematician, or computer scientist you can make a valuable contribution here. Hopefully, it will inspire them to think about pursuing a career outside of the traditional fields.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Group leader Anna Kreshuk, also one of the summer school\u2019s organisers, understands what it\u2019s like to make the transition into biological research, having studied computer science before she became interested in biology. \u201cGiving the students an idea of all the interesting things they could do in biology with their science was very cool. Now they have a much better understanding of where else they could go, and how much these kinds of skills are needed elsewhere. I\u2019m fascinated by the technologies that can be developed to help answer biological questions, and I hope many of the students will find similar fascinations too.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fellow group leader and organiser Aissam Ikmi agrees: \u201cThe students\u2019 engagement and interest in biology were reflected in the deep and challenging questions they asked during the lectures. I have no doubt that this initiation into experimental biology will make them more confident about considering a career in biological research. We feel the summer school has been a complete success.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"vf-blockquote\"><p>Nothing hinders you from participating and learning at EMBL<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Maria Aquilina, a first-year student and the youngest at the summer school, is studying for a BSc in maths and physics at the University of Malta. \u201cThe summer school gives us the possibility to meet people from different countries and different backgrounds. So, apart from the scientific aspect, there\u2019s also a multicultural aspect,\u201d she says. \u201cYou get different perspectives. It\u2019s not a question of age or experience; it\u2019s a question of having an open mindset and wanting to learn. Nothing hinders you from participating and learning at EMBL. PHOTO: Marietta Schupp\/EMBL<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>For Elkin Alvis Narvaez, a final-year undergraduate in physics at Universidad de los Andes, Colombia, the summer school was a great opportunity to learn about the research environment in Europe. \u201cWhen I go back to Colombia I\u2019m going to try to convince my boss to take a more interdisciplinary approach to research. That\u2019s what I\u2019ll take from my experience here. The summer school has been amazing. I love the facilities here at EMBL. PHOTO: Marietta Schupp\/EMBL<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Georgia Kefala, a physics student at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in Greece, enjoyed the practical aspect of the summer school. \u201cWe don\u2019t really do practical projects at university. This is the first time I\u2019ve done anything like this, and I love it! The environment here is really positive,\u201d she says. The experience has also prompted her to think more broadly about how she might use her skills in the future: \u201cIt\u2019s changed my whole perspective on the scientific community. I really want to be a part of it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"vf-blockquote\"><p>I see there\u2019s a place for my skills in this very collaborative sphere<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same university, Merkourios Simos has just finished the third year of a five-year diploma in computer and electrical engineering, and has little prior experience in biology. \u201cThat\u2019s challenging but not insurmountable,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s good for us to get out of our comfort zone and try new things.\u201d He too leaves with a different perspective: \u201cIt\u2019s given me a new insight into science, and what science can do for society. And what my place is in this environment of scientists, engineers and biologists.
