Anne Ephrussi<\/a> has been promoted to Director of the EMBL International Centre for Advanced Training (EICAT), effective from 1 July 2019, with responsibility for setting up an ambitious new EMBL training plan for scientists across Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rainer Pepperkok<\/a> has been promoted to Director of Scientific Core Facilities and Scientific Services (SCFS), effective from 1 July 2019. He is responsible for developing, advising and coordinating an outstanding SCFS Unit that corresponds to the needs of EMBL\u2019s research groups at all sites, and for developing close long-term collaborations with industrial partners. He will also directly support the Director General in developing the Heidelberg campus infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Paul Flicek<\/a> and Jo McEntyre<\/a> have been named Associate Directors of EMBL\u2019s European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) Services, set to take up their posts on 1 August 2019. They will be responsible for EMBL-EBI\u2019s extensive suite of data resources, with the appointment set to consolidate the institute\u2019s role as an international research infrastructure for the life sciences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThese promotions recognise the outstanding achievements of Anne, Rainer, Paul and Jo within and outside their respective areas of expertise,\u201d says Edith Heard, EMBL Director General. \u201cI would like to extend my warmest congratulations and I look forward to working more closely with them in their new roles.\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
\"Anne<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Anne Ephrussi<\/strong><\/a> has been Head of the Developmental Biology Unit<\/a> since 2007, Head of EMBL\u2019s International Centre for Advanced Training (EICAT)<\/a> since 2005, and Senior Scientist since 1998. As Head of the Developmental Biology Unit she manages eight research groups. Within EICAT, she promotes advanced training activities across the six EMBL sites, between EMBL and its sister institution EMBO, and between EMBL and research organisations in the EMBL member states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Rainer<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Rainer Pepperkok<\/strong><\/a> has been Head of the Advanced Light Microscopy Facility (ALMF)<\/a> since 1998, Senior Scientist since 2012, and Team Leader<\/a> in the Cell Biology and Biophysics Unit since 1999. Since 2014 he has led all scientific core facilities<\/a> and scientific services at EMBL Heidelberg. This comprises eight core facilities, offering cutting-edge services in areas like light and electron microscopy and mass spectrometry-based proteomics and metabolomics. The Unit also includes the mechanical and electronic workshops, instrument maintenance, and EMBL\u2019s Photolab.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Jo<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Paul Flicek<\/strong> <\/a>has been Head of Genes, Genomes and Variation resources at EMBL-EBI since 2012, an EMBL Senior Scientist since 2011, and Team Leader for Vertebrate Genomics since 2007. His team leads the development of the Ensembl<\/a> genome annotation resources and analysis infrastructure. Flicek also leads a research group<\/a> that focuses on the evolution of transcriptional regulation and on computational models for genome annotation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jo McEntyre<\/strong><\/a>, who was recently made an EMBL Senior Scientist, has been the Team Leader for Literature Services since 2009. Her team maintains Europe PMC<\/a>, a database of abstracts and full-text articles for the life sciences. Prior to joining EMBL-EBI, McEntyre was a staff scientist at NCBI and previously was the editor at Trends in Biochemical Sciences<\/em>, published by Elsevier.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
