{"id":16088,"date":"2019-06-11T15:38:00","date_gmt":"2019-06-11T13:38:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.embl.de\/?p=16088"},"modified":"2025-04-15T16:11:21","modified_gmt":"2025-04-15T14:11:21","slug":"sveika-lietuva","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/news\/lab-matters\/sveika-lietuva\/","title":{"rendered":"Sveika, Lietuva!"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>On 7 June,&nbsp;EMBL welcomed Lithuania as its 27th <a href=\"https:\/\/www.embl.de\/aboutus\/general_information\/organisation\/member_states\/?_ga=2.247337479.2056336898.1557127499-1068807389.1547201954\">member state<\/a>. \u201cWe are very pleased to take this next step for EMBL and for Lithuania,\u201d said EMBL Director General Edith Heard. \u201cIntegrating the European life sciences community and forming even closer ties between its researchers are overarching goals for EMBL and its member states.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lithuania became an EMBL prospect member state in <a href=\"https:\/\/news.embl.de\/lab-matters\/1509-lithuania\/\">September 2015&nbsp;<\/a>and soon thereafter a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between EMBL and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gmc.vu.lt\/en\/\">Life Sciences Center&nbsp;<\/a>at Vilnius University to foster joint collaboration. The centre hosts innovative biological research facilities and it currently trains approximately 800 undergraduate students and 120 PhD students in areas such as biochemistry and neurobiology. Silke Schumacher, EMBL Director of International Relations, is a member of the centre\u2019s International Advisory Council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cJoining EMBL as a member state and forming even closer collaborations with EMBL scientists represents an important milestone for the development of the Lithuanian life sciences,\u201d said Valdemaras Razumas, Vice-Minister of Education, Science and Sport of the Republic of Lithuania. \u201cOur researchers will&nbsp;have the opportunity to cooperate with world class partners and gain insight into the latest scientific developments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe vast growth of life sciences research worldwide and the increasing&nbsp;amounts of scientific data affirm that this field is very dynamic and that international collaboration is essential for the increase of Europe&#8217;s potential and that of its member states.\u201d Among many areas of shared scientific interest, EMBL is particularly looking to strengthen its collaborations with Lithuania in the fields of structural biology and CRISPR-Cas technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As an EMBL member state, Lithuania is now able to appoint up to two delegates to EMBL\u2019s governing body, the EMBL Council. \u201cVoting rights will enable Lithuania to actively participate in the EMBL&nbsp;Council, an important&nbsp;international&nbsp;forum&nbsp;where scientific and&nbsp;science-policy&nbsp;actors&nbsp;engage&nbsp;in&nbsp;strategic discussions&nbsp;about breakthrough science&nbsp;with&nbsp;broader&nbsp;societal impact,\u201d said Razumas.
