{"id":14385,"date":"2018-10-09T14:05:52","date_gmt":"2018-10-09T12:05:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.embl.de\/?p=14385"},"modified":"2024-03-22T11:21:37","modified_gmt":"2024-03-22T10:21:37","slug":"embl-in-the-uk-wendy-bickmore","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/news\/alumni\/embl-in-the-uk-wendy-bickmore\/","title":{"rendered":"EMBL in the UK: Wendy Bickmore"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In May 2018, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.embl.de\/aboutus\/alumni\/events-networks\/local-chapters\/uk\/82_edinburgh_2018\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">researchers and EMBL alumni in the UK gathered in Edinburgh<\/a> to learn about EMBL research, training and services, and to strengthen their scientific networks. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ed.ac.uk\/mrc-human-genetics-unit\/research\/bickmore-group\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wendy Bickmore<\/a>, the director of the Medical Research Council (MRC) Human Genetics Unit at the University of Edinburgh was invited to the event to reflect on her longstanding associations with EMBL and its researchers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is your research topic?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>My research topics focus on gene regulation and cell biology. We aim to study cell and molecular biology in a 3D context and, in particular, understand how genes are organised in the 3D space of the nucleus. We can\u2019t just study isolated cells any more, we\u2019ve got to have insights into how cells work in the appropriate spatial context in tissues. Therefore, we\u2019re trying to integrate microfluidic and other engineering platforms with imaging or genomics analysis methods. With these systems, we can better study cells in 3D structures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What\u2019s your connection to EMBL?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve been referred to as a &#8216;second generation\u2019 EMBL alumna: I haven\u2019t worked at EMBL myself, but there\u2019s been lots of crossover between scientists working at EMBL and researchers at my own institute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of our group leaders, Martin Taylor, worked at EMBL-EBI. There, Martin worked on computational biology, but since moving to the MRC Human Genetics Unit in Edinburgh, he\u2019s expanded his work to encompass some experimental biology too. In the other direction, so to speak, one of the Human Genetics Unit\u2019s most successful alumni, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.embl.es\/research\/unit\/sharpe\/members\/index.php?s_personId=CP-60027035\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">James Sharpe<\/a>, is now the head of EMBL Barcelona. I\u2019d like to think that his current scientific direction started with us. There are many similar stories of exchange and collaboration going in both directions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"vf-blockquote\"><p>I think many scientists who don\u2019t have a connection with EMBL could also benefit from this event<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s EMBL\u2019s high standards, scientific excellence, and wonderful facilities that make me want to continue my connection with EMBL. Also, I really enjoy going to EMBL conferences. I have to confess that I no longer read the scientific literature \u2013 there\u2019s just so much and I can\u2019t keep up! It\u2019s much easier to come to an EMBL conference for a few days, sit and listen to what\u2019s going on in the field, and find out about current research that way. It\u2019s a much better use of my time and it\u2019s more fun!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What\u2019s your opinion on the EMBL in the UK event and why are you involved?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I thought the event was great, especially the exchange with other scientists. Although I\u2019ve never worked at EMBL, I was asked to reflect on what EMBL means for research in the UK, and particularly at the University of Edinburgh. I think many scientists who don\u2019t have a connection with EMBL could also benefit from this event, because of its networking potential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What advice would you give a young researcher?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Do something you love and have a passion for.
