{"id":11251,"date":"2017-11-10T14:30:36","date_gmt":"2017-11-10T13:30:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.embl.de\/?p=11251"},"modified":"2024-03-22T11:49:07","modified_gmt":"2024-03-22T10:49:07","slug":"renewal-of-the-jsbg-agreement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/news\/lab-matters\/renewal-of-the-jsbg-agreement\/","title":{"rendered":"EMBL and ESRF renew collaboration agreement"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Today, EMBL and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.esrf.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ESRF<\/a> re-expressed their commitment to working together by extending their bilateral collaboration agreement until 2021. The first agreement was signed in 1997, soon after the opening of ESRF.&nbsp; It sets out how the two institutions collaborate on developing new instruments and offering innovative services to structural biologists worldwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under the agreement, EMBL and ESRF scientists and engineers have automated most instruments on the X-ray beamlines, allowing users to collect diffraction data more <a href=\"https:\/\/news.embl.de\/science\/1509-massif1\/\">easily and efficiently<\/a>, on increasingly small crystals. One recent joint achievement is the <a href=\"https:\/\/news.embl.de\/science\/1411_massif\/\">full automation<\/a> of the process of protein structure determination, from protein crystallization to online data collection, via robotic crystal harvesting. This pipeline will be particularly useful to systematically screen how small molecules bind to proteins, an important part in the drug development process.&nbsp; It is therefore not only of interest to academic users, but also increasingly to <a href=\"https:\/\/news.embl.de\/science\/1604-crystaldirect\/\">pharmaceutical companies<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image size-full wp-image-11415\"><figure class=\"vf-figure  | vf-figure--align vf-figure--align-centered \"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"620\" height=\"380\" class=\"vf-figure__image\" src=\"https:\/\/news.embl.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/20171110-signature-jsbg.jpg\" alt=\"EMBL and ESRF extend their Joint Structural Biology Group. PHOTO: ESRF<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe ESRF\/EMBL Joint Structural Biology Group has an amazing record of instrumentation and methods development that has kept the ESRF at the forefront of structural biology using synchrotron radiation,\u201d explains Stephen Cusack, head of EMBL\u2019s Grenoble site. \u201cThe JSBG has brought enormous benefits to both institutions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To remain on top of the <a href=\"https:\/\/news.embl.de\/science\/jacques-dubochet-awarded-nobel-prize-for-chemistry\/\">most recent technological developments<\/a>, EMBL, ESRF, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ibs.fr\/spip.php?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">IBS<\/a> decided to complement the instruments available on campus with a powerful cryo-electron microscope: the Titan Krios, inaugurated today. The instrument will be run by a joint ESRF\/IBS\/EMBL team, with <a href=\"https:\/\/news.embl.de\/science\/new-cryo-em-facility\/\">Michael Hons<\/a> as the participating scientist from EMBL.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This will bring a new possibilities for scientists in Grenoble and for external users.
