{"id":77251,"date":"2025-11-20T11:17:38","date_gmt":"2025-11-20T10:17:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/news\/?post_type=awards&#038;p=77251"},"modified":"2025-11-20T11:18:35","modified_gmt":"2025-11-20T10:18:35","slug":"maria-bernabeu-receives-e1-milion-for-cerebral-malaria-research","status":"publish","type":"awards","link":"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/news\/awards-honours\/maria-bernabeu-receives-e1-milion-for-cerebral-malaria-research","title":{"rendered":"Maria Bernabeu receives \u20ac1 million for cerebral malaria research"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Maria Bernabeu and her group at EMBL Barcelona received the prestigious Spanish <a href=\"https:\/\/lacaixafoundation.org\/en\/research-health\">CaixaResearch Health grant<\/a> to generate 3D blood-brain barrier models to better understand disease pathogenesis and identify disease treatments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/groups\/bernabeu\/\">Bernabeu group<\/a> studies cerebral malaria by building 3D human blood-brain-barrier (BBB) models. These models contain several critical cell types present in the human BBB and are one of the most complete organ-on-chip models to date.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This grant will allow the Bernabeu Group to form an alliance with EMBL-EBI, the University of Glasgow, and the Malawi-Liverpool-Wellcome Programme to take their BBB model a step further. The team will use new tissue analysis tools to study preserved brain samples from deceased patients, together with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gla.ac.uk\/schools\/infectionimmunity\/staff\/christophermoxon\/\">Christopher Moxon<\/a>\u2019s Lab at the University of Glasgow and in Malawi. This will allow the researchers to make a detailed map of cell types in the brain and their disruption markers during cerebral malaria.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Researchers at EMBL Barcelona will build an advanced 3D experimental model of brain blood vessels that includes microglia \u2013 immune cells from the brain \u2013 and expose it to malaria-infected blood cells to track how BBB damage occurs during infection.
